The Wisconsin coaching staff hasn't done a lot of recruiting out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League lately, but the one recruit they have picked up seems to be an elite one.
It was announced late last week Cameron Hughes has been named to the Reebok AJHL North Division All-League Team. The selections for each team were determined through a voting system by the League General Managers and Coaches.
Just a 17-year-old center in a league traditionally dominated by 19 and 20-year olds, Hughes averaged over one point per game with the Spruce Grove Saints. Hughes finished the regular season with 21 goals and 36 assists in 52 games.
Hughes visited Madison in mid-December with his father and ended up committing to the Badgers in early February. Hughes also visited Penn State, Michigan State and Ohio State.
"The passion the coaches showed and the passion they had towards to their team -- it gave me the best opportunity," Hughes told Bucky's 5th Quarter after making his decision.
Hughes was widely regarded as the top uncommitted forward in Western Canada when he decided to take his talents to Wisconsin. Early reports consider the elite-skating center a potential top-two-round draft selection in the 2015 NHL Draft.
Hughes' timeline to Madison is still to be determined. After the season, Hughes said he will sit down with the Wisconsin coaching staff to make a decision whether it's best for him to play another season of junior hockey or jump into Big Ten action.
For now, Hughes is focused on winning a title with Spruce Grove. The Saints received a bye in the first round of the AJHL North Division playoffs.
