Yes, we're talking kickers. Although if you've followed Wisconsin football even remotely since Phillip Welch graduated, you know this is a big deal. Kyle French has left the program and Jack Russell hardly inspired confidence, leaving UW's special teams unit once again in a bind.
Enter Rafael Gaglianone, a strong-legged kicker from Tennessee via Sao Paulo, Brazil. From noted kicking expert Chris Sailer:
[Gaglianone's] field goals are perhaps the very best in the nation. His ball is pure and very true. Kickoffs are also near the top of his class. A great competitor who kicks well under pressure.
Sounds great! We'll take it. Check the video below for proof that Gaglianone can kick from 57 yards out.
I'm not sure what this says about the state of things, but he could very well be one of the highest-impact freshmen next year.
Verbally committed Nov. 17, 2013
Gaglianone was also offered by N.C. State. He visited Wisconsin for the Nov. 16 game vs. Indiana and committed right away. Tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Genyk is credited for his recruitment. From the Times Free Pressin Tennessee:
"I loved everything about my visit to Wisconsin. I was worried about the cold before going up there, but then I realized if I'm going to play in the NFL, most of those teams play in the cold so I better get used to it. The facilities are great, it's a Big Ten school and there's an opportunity for me to play right away."
