Wisconsin is beginning a rich tradition of athletes named "Beau." Beau Hoopman won the silver medal at the IRA (a.k.a., the men's rowing national championships) in the men's 8 in 2002 before going on the win the Olympic gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. A few years later, Beau Allen spearheaded a stout front seven at nose tackle.
Beau Benzschawel will look to continue this mighty tradition of Beaus in Wisconsin athletics when he steps on campus this summer. At 6'6, 240 pounds, he has the frame of a mighty good tight end. He isn't regarded highly by any of the big recruiting services, but few small-school Wisconsin prospects are. This is a classic developmental prospect.
Benzschawel was actually a Syracuse commit once upon a time, but when a Wisconsin offer came in October, he quickly flipped. Though 247 Sports seems to think that Benzschawel is an offensive tackle, and that may be where he ultimately winds up, his ball skills look too good on tape to restrict the man to blocking. He is huge, with excellent hands and the ability to snag passes in the middle of heavy traffic. Why not get excited?
