UPDATE, 7:35 p.m.: More on Evans' academic situation from Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
However, a source familiar with the makeup of UW's 2014 class on Monday told the Journal Sentinel academic issues will prevent Evans from signing with UW.
The issues are a combination of Evans' high school grades and his qualifying test score.
UPDATE, 6:39 p.m.: Shortly after news broke that Craig Evans won't be enrolling at Wisconsin, the Sun Prairie, Wis., defensive tackle himself tweeted that he's headed to Michigan State.
And if your a fan of me be a fan of me despite wherever I go and with tht being said I have officially committed to MSU #GoGreenGoWhite— solo_dolo (@craigevans18) February 4, 2014
@SheeDaddyDBWH thnks a lot broski gudd luck to you and the rest of the badger 2014 class still have mad respect for you guys— solo_dolo (@craigevans18) February 4, 2014
That's Conor Sheehy, one of Wisconsin's three defensive lineman commits for 2014, tweeting at Evans. At 6'4, 260 pounds, Sheehy could very well slide inside to play tackle alongside three-star, Jesup, Ga., DT Jeremy Patterson.
Evans also added that his decision to pass over Wisconsin is "not about the academics."
As you all may have heard I'm no longer a badger and no it's not about the academics just the best decision for me ....— solo_dolo (@craigevans18) February 4, 2014
If you've been even a cursory recruiting watcher this season, you've noticed that there has been sound and fury about the tale of Craig Evans. He was in, he was out, he was in. He was locked. And then he was going to visit Tennessee?
But now, according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Sun Prairie, Wis., defensive tackle looks like he's going to be out of this season's recruiting class.
DT Craig Evans of Sun Prairie HS will not be part of #Badgers 2014 class. Academics.— Jeff Potrykus (@jaypo1961) February 3, 2014
There have been rumors and reports swirling around whether Evans was going to get the academic numbers necessary to get in, and the expectation now is that Evans will end up at Michigan State. As for the Badgers, Jeremy Patterson looks like he's going to be the only defensive tackle that comes signs with Wisconsin on Wednesday.
But either way, the good feelings around this class have absolutely taken a hit.
