USA Hockey unveiled on Tuesday the 30 players selected to the preliminary roster for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team. Included on the list was Wisconsin defenseman Jack Dougherty, who is in his freshman season for the Badgers.
The final U.S. roster will be named by Dec. 24. Team USA will compete in the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 26-Jan. 5, in Montreal, Quebec, and Toronto, Ontario.
"We're excited about the group of players that we're bringing to our camp in Boston," said Jim Johannson, general manager of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team and assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. "The depth of our talent pool continues to make our job more difficult in getting to a camp roster and ultimately the final roster, and that's really a credit to the great job done at the grassroots level by coaches all across the country."
The chosen players will attend training camp from Dec. 16-19 in Boston at Walter Brown Arena on the Boston University campus. The camp will culminate with a pre-tournament game against the BU Terriers on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. ET.
Dougherty has previous experience with USA Hockey, as last season he notched seven goals and 21 points in 65 games last season for the National Team Developmental Program U-18 squad. That team went on to win the U-18 World Championsips, with Dougherty scoring the go-ahead goal in 5-2 victory over Czech Republic.
Dougherty also helped the U.S. U-18 Select Team to a second-place finish at the 2013 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, leading all American defensemen in points with three (one goal, two assists) over five games.
In addition to Dougherty, Badger hockey is well represented on the staff of this year's U.S. National Junior Team. Wisconsin 1990 NCAA champion and former assistant coach Mark Osiecki serves as the team's head coach, while the team's assistant coaches include fellow UW 1990 NCAA champion Don Granato and former UW assistant coach Kevin Patrick. Osiecki is currently an assistant coach with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, while Granato is head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Team for the National Team Development Program and Patrick is an assistant coach at Vermont.
