Wisconsin was completely outplayed for 60 minutes Friday night against Boston College in a 9-2 loss. What exactly happened? Let's take a look at the film.
First period
1-0, Boston College (10:14): Austin Cangelosi (Kevin Hayes, Johnny Gaudreau)
The play is started when the puck is dumped into the corner to Landon Peterson's right. Frankie Simonelli is out-hustled to the puck in the corner, but a centering feed is stolen by Mark Zengerle (circled in red). Zengerle attempts to clear the puck on his backhand, but BC forward Austin Cangelosi swoops past and picks off the clearing attempt.
Joseph LaBate (bottom red arrow) curls to the outside when he sees Zengerle with the puck, which takes him out of the play when the clearing attempt is picked off. Jake McCabe followed his man into the corner, while Simonelli (top red arrow) doesn't react to the play in time, allowing Cangelosi a clear lane through the slot right in on the Wisconsin goal, where he buries the shot to put BC up 1-0.
2-0, Boston College (11:04): Cangelosi (Hayes, Ryan Fitzgerald)
Ryan Fitzgerald picks up the puck in the BC defensive zone and the BC forwards leave the zone. Wisconsin's Joe Faust attempts to step up on Fitzgerald, but he quickly centers a pass to Kevin Hayes, who is sprung on a 2-on-1 with Cangelosi, with Wisconsin's Kevin Schulze the only defenseman left after Faust took himself out of the play stepping up.
While Faust is attempting to get back in the play, Schulze favors the puck carrier, leaving Cangelosi wide open on the back side of the 2-on-1.
Cangelosi beats Faust to the net, and Schulze can't stop Hayes from making the centering pass to the wide-open Cangelosi, who swiftly deposits the puck in the open net, leaving Peterson no chance.
3-0, Boston College (13:30): Gaudreau (Adam Gilmour, Steve Santini)
The play starts with Gaudreau streaking down the boards and firing a shot off the near-side pipe. The puck would eventually transition back into the Boston College defensive zone.
Gaudreau takes his sweet time coming back into the zone, but it works out when BC gains control of the puck. Gilmore fires a long pass down to Gaudreau, who blows past Simonelli on a breakaway.
All alone with the goaltender, Gaudreau makes a move to his forehand, getting Peterson to slide in the process, but quickly reverses fields and tucks the puck in the net on his backhand.
4-0, Boston College (15:53): Ian McCoshen (Gilmore, Bill Arnold)
Defensive zone draw in Wisconsin's end. Kerdiles is kicked out of the faceoff, so LaBate has to take the draw. Bill Arnold wins the draw back to Ian McCoshen, who rips a shot from the point on the Badgers goal, beating Peterson for the 4-0 advantage.
Second period
5-0 Boston College (0:21): Michael Matheson (Gaudreau, Gilmour)
Gaudreau steals the puck along the boards and finds Michael Matheson streaking. LaBate had turned up the ice thinking the Badgers were leaving the zone, but can't catch Matheson. Kerdiles had also started up ice and despite a diving attempt, can't get to Matheson before he gets a shot off, making the score 5-0.
6-0, Boston College (1:45): Scott Savage (Chris Calnan, Patrick Brown)
The puck is running along the boards, and Wisconsin freshman Jedd Soleway picks it up on the near-side boards. BC's Scott Savage steals the puck from Soleway and has a clear path to the net with Grant Besse and Jefferson Dahl already heading up ice thinking the puck is leaving the zone.
Eddie Wittchow is the Wisconsin defenseman in front of the net, and he takes away the BC forward out front. Peterson is partially screened in the process, and Savage is able to snap a shot into the net. Peterson is pulled after this goal.
7-0, Boston College (13:34): Michael Sit (Brendan Silk, McCoshen)
McCoshen flips the puck up the boards to Brendan Silk, who picks it up near the top of the circles in the BC defensive zone. Faust steps up on Silk, but Silk is able to chip the puck forward to Michael Sit, creating an odd-man rush at the Wisconsin defensive zone.
Once again, Schulze is the only man back for Wisconsin, but this time he takes away the pass allowing Sit ample room to get a shot off on Adam Miller who had replaced Peterson in goal. Sit is able to beat Miller with the shot to put BC up 7-0.
7-1, Wisconsin (14:45): Michael Mersch (Jake McCabe, Tyler Barnes)
With the Badgers on the power play, McCabe sends a shot on goal that is deflected by Mersch out front to get the Badgers on the board.
Third period
8-1 Boston College (4:44): Hayes (Cangelosi, Fitzgerald)
Besse is beaten to a loose puck at the blueline, and BC is able to keep the puck in the zone. The puck is chipped to the far boards, where Fitzgerald draws in three Badgers (Soleway, Dahl and Wittchow). Fitzgerald is able to chip the puck down low into the corner.
Cangelosi picks up the pick in the corner and Drake pursues. Cangelosi sees Hayes streaking down the slot all alone and makes a ridiculous pass to find Hayes.
Hayes does the rest, making a nice move to tuck the puck around Miller.
8-2, Wisconsin (9:18): Kerdiles (Faust, Morgan Zulinick)
The Badgers get a 3-on-2 line-rush and Zulinick sends a pass to Faust, who is streaking down the far-side boards.
The Badgers enter the zone 3-on-2, and Faust fires a shot on BC goaltender Brian Billett. Billett kicks a huge rebound out into the slot.
With Zulinick taking a defenseman with him to the far post attacking the zone, Kerdiles is left alone to pick up the loose rebound in the high slot. Falling to the ice, Kerdiles is able to fire a shot past Billett for the Badgers' second goal of the night.
9-2, Boston College (10:55): Patrick Brown (Quinn Smith)
With Wisconsin on the power play, Quinn Smith sneaks behind McCabe and picks his pocket in the neutral zone. At the same time, Patrick Brown is streaking into the neutral zone and steals the puck away and is off to the races.
