Badgers transfer DE heading to Cincinnati

The Badgers are losing one of their top rotational defensive ends.

The Wisconsin Badgers are facing another loss along the defensive line, as rotational defensive end Darian Varner entered the transfer portal and recently committed to Cincinnati.

Varner, a rising redshirt senior, will have one year of eligibility remaining as a second-time transfer.

A heralded transfer to Wisconsin during last year’s cycle, Varner could never carve out a significant role with the Badgers, posting five tackles and a fumble recovery in 2023.

At Temple during his redshirt sophomore season in 2022, Varner broke out, recording 7.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.

But, injuries and a role change led to an unsuccessful year at Wisconsin before Varner ultimately chose to move on.

He’ll join a Cincinnati team that went 3-9 in head coach Scott Satterfield’s first year with the program, looking to bolster the pass rush.

Varner was the second defensive lineman to transfer out of Wisconsin, as Rodas Johnson decided to move on as well for his final season of college football, ultimately landing at Texas A&M.
