BREAKING: Badgers DE Darian Varner entering the transfer portal

The Badgers are losing another defensive lineman to the transfer portal.

NCAA Football: Memphis at Temple Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

Wisconsin Badgers defensive lineman Darian Varner is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, Bucky’s 5th Quarter has learned.

Varner played one season at Wisconsin after transferring from Temple, seeing limited action as a rotational piece and recording five tackles and zero sacks.

An All-AAC First-Team selection in 2022, Varner came to Madison with high expectations after recording 7.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss in his redshirt sophomore year at Temple.

However, upon arriving to Madison, Varner was asked to change his weight to become bigger to play on the defensive line, and ultimately could never carve out a role with the Badgers.

With Varner gone, the Badgers are losing two of their top defensive ends, as Rodas Johnson also entered the portal as a graduate transfer, leaving Wisconsin with serious depth issues.

Currently, the Badgers are set to return just one starter from their 2023 defensive line, James Thompson, as Johnson and Gio Paez are both not expected back, and now lose even more of their depth at the position with Varner’s decision to transfer out.
