We covered the injury situation for redshirt freshman center Dan Voltz this morning. He was out of practice with a hamstring injury that may or may not have been lingering before Wisconsin took the field Wednesday. Either way, it appears the issue is not so severe.
"I don't think it will be too bad," offensive line coach T.J. Woods said after practice. "I think it is a tweak. We'll see.
"He still got to go in and check it out."
#Badgers coach Gary Andersen says should know more in AM on Voltz's status.— Jeff Potrykus (@jaypo1961) August 15, 2013
As we mentioned earlier, left guard Dallas Lewallen slid over to center with Voltz out. Back-up right guard Zac Matthias took Lewallen's spot, rounding out a line that's certainly not bad, but also rather extremely testing the unit's depth. As Andersen said, we'll know more tomorrow. Till then, it's just hoping for the best.
News, notes and observations
TJ Watt, Joe Ferguson, TJ Reynard, Jakarrie Washington, Connor Senger and Chikwe Obasih all earned their "Motion W" decals. #Badgers— John Veldhuis (@JohnVeldhuis) August 15, 2013
The interesting name there is Senger, aka "Young Russ." He becomes the first quarterback to earn his Motion 'W,' even before Tanner McEvoy. Perhaps Curt Phillips, McEvoy's Big Brother, is being extra stingy considering they're locked in a battle for the starting spot? Probably not, but either way, it doesn't detract from Senger's doing as a walk-on.
#Badgers coach G. Andersen said q QB race still not settled.— Jeff Potrykus (@jaypo1961) August 15, 2013
When #Badgers ran 2-min drill tonite Stave went with No. 1 offense. Phillips went with No. 2. Defense had 2 stops— Jeff Potrykus (@jaypo1961) August 15, 2013
Now that's a little more interesting. You can never take one single practice too seriously, though it appears if there's a 1A and a 1B, Stave's the former ahead of Phillips.
GA: "If I would say who is ahead of the game, D has definitely pulled away the last couple days. Hopefully, the O can reel them in" #Badgers— Benjamin Worgull (@TheBadgerNation) August 15, 2013
Senior Defensive End Pat Muldoon had a great practice today from what I saw, was constantly in the offense's backfield. #Badgers— Evan Flood (@Evan_Flood) August 14, 2013
