A week after giving up 468 yards against Arizona State, Wisconsin held Purdue to a third of that en route to a 41-10 blowout. Which personnel groupings in particular gave Purdue fits?

After a dominant two weeks to start the season, Wisconsin's defense fell back to earth a bit in the desert. Coming into their fourth game of the year against the Purdue Boilermakers, fans wondered how the team would bounce back after a controversial loss and a game in which certain areas were exposed.

Saturday, those questions were answered, and quite emphatically. Confusing Purdue quarterback Rob Henry and the Boilermaker offense, linebackers Chris Borland and Conor O'Neill once again led a defense that overwhelmed the opposition.

Numbers to notice

180: Number of total yards Purdue's offense gained (compared to Arizona State's 468 last week)

12: Number of first downs by Purdue's offense (compared to Arizona State's 32 last week)

8: Tackles for loss by Wisconsin's defense, compared to three vs. Arizona State

7: Quarterback hurries by Wisconsin defense

7: Three-and-outs by Purdue's offense

The run defense was stout, allowing only 2 yards per carry. The secondary, which was exposed last week, responded well by blanketing receivers and adding some pressure on Purdue quarterback Rob Henry.

4: Recorded sacks by Wisconsin's defense

3.2: Yards per play for Purdue offense

2-of-14: Arizona State's third-down efficiency

0: Penalties by the Badgers' defense (six last week, all against the secondary)

3: Penalties Purdue's offense committed

1: Number of turnovers Wisconsin forced (2013 total: seven; 2013 prediction: 25)

Purdue's offense was different from other opponents' this year. While Wisconsin's previous opponents ran more spread and pistol-like offenses, Purdue came in with more of a pro-style offense. Henry and head coach Darrell Hazel utilized two-, and at times, three-tight end sets. Sound familiar?

To counter an offense that amassed 256 yards through the air against Notre Dame, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda used the following personnel:

3-4 odd front: This was used much more this week versus the pro-style looks Purdue gave

Even front out of the 3-4, this time more with B-side linebacker Vince Biegel lining up as the "fourth" linemen in place of injured linebacker Brendan Kelly

One defensive lineman and a flurry of linebackers and defensive backs

What went right

You can say a lot went right. Four sacks. Seven hurries. Eight tackles for loss. There is one formation I do want to dig a little deeper into, that being the confusion-inducing, pressure-increasing personnel utilizing one defensive lineman and a controlled chaos of defensive players near the line of scrimmage.

Used on eight of Purdue's 14 third-down attempts, this scheme gave the Boilermakers fits. Henry completed just two of eight passes against this defense for only 10 yards, and was pressured constantly. No first downs were gained against it, either.

Why? Here are three different examples of the look to showcase what can and cannot be sent. First look, the first time it was deployed by Aranda:

Before the snap, defensive lineman Tyler Dippel stands up but is the lone defensive linemen. Linebackers Ethan Armstrong, O'Neill and Biegel crowd the line, rounding out what looks like to be the four rushers. But notice what happens right at the snap:

Borland rushes in from the middle while Armstrong, lined up to the left side of the defense/right side of the offense, backs off into coverage. Dippel rushes in the middle while O'Neill, originally looking like he's coming from the middle, stunts outward to the edge. Biegel, O'Neill and Borland all rush from the left side of the o-line, resulting in pressure and an incomplete pass:

Not only did O'Neill hunt Henry down and force the incompletion off the hurry, but it appeared Biegel and Borland may have sniffed out a screen in the middle of the field, judging by the four Boilermakers linemen standing in the middle of the field not engaged in any blocking.

So different linebackers were rushing here -- what about other defensive personnel? In the second quarter, Aranda sends rushers again, this time from the secondary:

This picture is taken just after the offensive huddle is broken. Dippel is the lone guy in a "set" look, looking to rush just off the right guard. No one else is set. Ever get the feeling there's a pack of rabid wolves just waiting to strike? Note how the defense moves fluidly before the snap:

Cornerback Jakarrie Washington (No. 22) lines up to the left side of the defense and rushes off the corner, while Dippel moves inside while Biegel and O'Neill also rush. Borland and Armstrong, while looking like they're blitzing, drop back.

The four rushers get more pressure as Borland, Armstrong and sophomore safety Michael Caputo read yet another screen and stuff the Purdue offense for a 2-yard loss.

Did they only send four rushers in this scheme? No. In the third quarter, they sent five.

Looks like another standard look with this personnel. Four linebackers and Dippel crowd the line, bouncing around ready to rush. Notice where safety Dezmen Southward is at the far left of the screen, 8 yards off the line, but look where he is in the shot below:

Borland, once lined up to the left side of the defense, starts rotating back to the middle of the field for coverge as Southward starts his blitz to the right along with O'Neill targeting that left side of the offensive line.

Armstrong gets off his block on the right tackle with his speed and forces another incompletion with O'Neill and Southward from the right side getting there.

Purdue's offense was often confused and never found much of a rhythm with this offense. You can point to many individual players for honors in this game, but the defense as a whole answered the call after a rough week.

Fun fact: Wisconsin has yet to allow a passing touchdown through four games. Chances are pretty good that will change Saturday in Columbus.

What went wrong

The botched offensive play apparently confused Wisconsin's defense as well in the second quarter, as Henry scampered 22 yards for Purdue's first points of the game. The defense appeared to have over pursued to the right, allowing Henry to run through the gaping hole in the middle of the field, then cut it to the left for the score.

Final thoughts

Another test awaits on the road this week for Wisconsin against Ohio State. How will Aranda and the defense prepare for quarterback Braxton Miller and the Buckeye offense? Be prepared for a level of talent Wisconsin might not have seen before, even after facing Arizona State two weeks ago. Talent, as head coach Gary Andersen mentioned during Monday's press conference, that has increased in its explosiveness compared to last year.

"I would say this, if you watch the tape from a year ago to now, it's obvious that they've made an emphasis to recruit speed in a lot of different areas on the offensive side of the ball," Andersen said. "They've got receivers that can run, catch, make plays."

"They do have a lot of speed there."

The scoreboard was a promising indicator, but the Badgers' offense remains a work in progress.

It was Wisconsin football, circa 2010, brought back to life.

It was that one-sided, the Badgers running it down their opponent's throats and then running it some more because, well, why not? It worked beautifully in a 41-10 victory over Purdue and if the game doesn't demand they turn to a hardly above-average quarterback and one-man receiving corps, there's no reason to stray from the ground.

It was Melvin Gordon, James White and Corey Clement instead of John Clay, a younger White and Montee Ball, but it was like staring at a reflection of your younger (perhaps fatter) self. Only Gordon might be blessed with more natural talent than any name on that list.

Dazzling, brilliant, jaw-dropping -- pick your preferred and it will accurately depict Gordon's play through four games. His biggest plays often come on sweeps and other offensive sets designed to exploit his speed. But Gordon's first-quarter touchdown was a between-the-tackles charge, tacklers in tow as he climbed over the goal line to complete a 95-yard drive.

The redshirt sophomore's 624 rushing yards (156 per game) lead the nation, his seven rushing touchdowns trailing only Ohio State's Jordan Hall.

To be fair, the field probably isn't so open for Gordon if White isn't setting the pace with a quick but more uphill running style. White was his own kind of brilliant. Watching him cut and juke his way through the Boilermakers' defense on that 70-yard run in the second quarter was like watching a gifted painter recreate a beautiful landscape on his tapestry.

Also worth noting: the Badgers improved to 12-0 when White runs for at least 100 yards. That's more than pure coincidence -- the offense finds a different gear when White finds room to run.

It came against a lower-tier Big Ten rushing defense, but UW still rode its backs to 388 yards -- 157 more than it managed against a much better Arizona State defense -- very similar to the numbers it posted over much lesser foes like UMass and Tennessee Tech. Leaky as Purdue's defensive line looked, it's a Big Ten defense and that's a significant step up from those early cupcakes.

Joel Stave closed with a very game manager-esque line of 12-for-19 with 158 passing yards. He was like a less accurate version of -- to keep the metaphor rolling -- Scott Tolzien.

When the quarterback only attempts to complete a pass 19 times, the sample size is too limited to draw big-picture conclusions. That said, Stave left much to be desired. The bomb to Jared Abbrederis -- who seemed to be roaming alone in a pasture far from anyone in a gold and black uniform -- late in the third quarter was way off the mark, and Stave was visibly upset with himself for missing the easy touchdown.

He made several tight completions along the sideline, but he misplaced too many throws. Stave's second-quarter interception wasn't a blatant misread, but his field vision still needs work, as evidenced by his three interceptions in four games.

The most pressing concern offensively is still the receivers. Abbrederis is everything fans envisioned and then some, but better secondaries (read: Ohio State) will build a gamplan to limit his effectiveness. The lack of downfield options aside from Abbrederis severely limits the aerial game, and No. 4 alone accounted for nearly 60 percent of Wisconsin's passing yards against Purdue.

White was the only target with more than a single reception -- he had three for 49 yards -- and though he's a valuable option to have, he's not a deep threat. Freshman receiver Rob Wheelwright also dropped a 4th-and-7 pass from Curt Phillips -- meaningless in this game, but not something that could be glossed over against Ohio State.

My favorite completion of the game was that dump screen pass to White in the backfield that the speedy tailback turned into a 35-yard gain. It's a great escape route for a broken play and also something I would like to see offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig call a few times a game.

Though they threw some nice blocks for their running backs, the tight ends were all but invisible. Part of this was a lack of passing plays, but Jacob Pedersen needs to establish himself as a steady receiving threat to ease up the pressure on Abbrederis. He also went down midway through the game, and his status is unknown for Saturday.

All this brings us back to the offense's very foundation: the offensive line. It overpowered the Boilermakers' front as should be expected, and the running backs don't produce five touchdowns without some superb blocking.

Purdue sacked Stave just once, and he generally had enough time to survey the field and make a throw without oncoming defenders swarming him from all sides, a la Arizona State. They also went penalty-free.

In 60 minutes of football, it seemed like Ludwig kind of flipped back and forth between two pages of his playbook. But that's because he didn't need to try anything more fancy than a run around the edge. He ran the ball with mind-numbing consistency because he could, and the game become a tutorial on how a power-run attack can crush an opposing defense.

As much as analysts raved about how this was such a powerful statement after the debacle in Tempe, it left me wanting more. Call me greedy, but too many of Stave's balls were off-target and the tailbacks were stuffed at the line too frequently given the caliber of Purdue's defense.

Saturday's trip to Ohio State will be the toughest test of the season. The room for error will be nearly non-existent.

Christian Petersen

To paraphrase EPMD: If you have a problem with Joel Stave, you gots to chill.

If you're calling for a new quarterback right now, you're spoiled.

Flat out. I'm not even going to couch it in a nice term. You are spoiled. The state of Wisconsin has been blessed with a great quarterback in some way shape or form since the Packers dealt a first-rounder for Brett Favre way back in 1992. I know, Badger fan doesn't equal Packer fan, but stay with me here, because we are still in a place where the single greatest quarterback rental in the history of the world is fresh in people's minds and hearts.

And right now, that's Joel Stave's biggest sin. He's not a spectacular athlete with a good enough arm to make plays with a subpar receiving crew in Seattle. He's not Russell Wilson. In fact, I'd even be willing to say that Stave might not even be an all-conference quarterback right now despite the fact the conference is pretty quarterback-poor on the national stage.

But you people are just looking for a reason to complain if you're calling for Curt Phillips or Bart Houston to start. Because guess what? Stave's a good quarterback. He's not just cromulent or serviceable or decent. He's good.

I'll lay my case out for you.

1. He's improved his completion percentage.

Last year, when those of us who were in the tank for the dimensions of offense and fun that he brought to the table, we forgot one important thing. He completed under 60 percent of his passes. 58.8 percent's not the most horrendous number, but it's Mike Glennon territory, and no one likes him. This year? The number's gone up to 63.2.

And last year? He was admittedly weak on third down. (14-for-36, 187 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions.) This year? He's already 18-for-32, with 214 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions. In fact, he's improved his yards-per-attempt from 5.19 in 2012 to 6.69 this year.

I know what you're thinking. What's the deal with the interceptions? Well, no interceptions are good. And if we're going to deep dive into this, they suffer more from an unfortunate bit of timing more than incompetence. Two were on obvious passing situations (3rd-and-7 or more) and he also threw two inside the opponent's 39-yard line, but out of the red zone.

I mean, it's logical to expect teams to defend against the pass at that point. And the advanced quarterback can make plays there. Stave's good. But even I'll admit he's not there yet.

2. While the offensive line's opening holes like nobody's business...

They're not the most athletic line of the bunch. A team that can generate some push on the defensive line will give the Badgers' line troubles, as noted by Stave's 15-for-30 against Arizona State. Which for what the Badgers generally want to do? It's damn near spectacular. I mean, Corey Clement's 36th nationally in rushing yardage with exactly one first-half carry.

But it's like Mike Tyson said: "Everybody has a plan until they get hit in the face." And when you consider the depth and quality of the receiving corps, a quarterback under pressure is a quarterback who will develop bad tendencies. Maybe the Badgers should play it a little more snug in regards to run/pass tendencies. But that's getting off-topic. That's a story for another day.

3. James White's worth.

Speaking of sins, James White's is the fact that he's the bridge between the two special talents of Montee Ball and Melvin Gordon. But there's a reason why White is as deserving of as much playing time as Gordon. It may be just as much of an indictment of the lack of emergence in the receivers as it speaks to White's talent, but the reason why we aren't seeing all sorts of brackets, rolls and 17 amounts of coverage on what Jared Abbrederis runs.

It's because White's receiving well out of the backfield. Right now, he's second place in receptions, and he's on pace to get 40 catches on the year. And I know what you're thinking. That's great. We have our second receiver.

Pause. The reason why you don't want a running back to be among the leaders in receptions is that it says there is a problem with getting the ball downfield on a consistent basis. Look at Stave's interception Saturday. The receiver ran the wrong dang route. And outside of that screen White turned into a 35-yard gain Saturday? He's been averaging eight yards a catch. He's the checkdown. The "break glass in case of emergency" guy.

You don't want to have to keep throwing it to him unless you absolutely have to. And apparently the Badgers do.

I'm not even going to go to the fact that Joel Stave's working with his third offensive coordinator in his third year. I don't need to. That's an excuse. And the numbers are there. Stave's not in the midst of some sort of shocking degeneration. Stave's consolidating his skills, and he's working well with what he has.

He's a good quarterback with roughly 10 games of college football under his belt. He can make the plays most of the pre-Wilson quarterbacks just couldn't. He may not be a superstar. He may never be a superstar. But he's a starter of a fine vintage.

And if you disagree with me? Well, you've been spoiled.

Joel Stave has struggled to find his groove this year. If he doesn't find a rhythm Saturday in Columbus, the Badgers will have little chance to pull off the upset.

That, folks, is how you respond.

After the west coast debacle out in Tempe, I know fans and coaches alike were anxious to see how the Badgers would come out and play against Purdue. Safe to say, Wisconsin got over the Arizona State loss just fine.

The Badgers delivered yet another Boilermaker beatdown Saturday, thanks in large part to Wisconsin's star-studded running back tandem of James White and Melvin Gordon. Those guys are good, huh? What a luxury it is to have two guys of that caliber in the backfield when you have a quarterback that's struggling.

With the Purdue win officially in the books, the game everybody has had circled on their calendars for months is finally just around the corner. Let's recap what we liked and what we didn't from Saturday, and of course, preview the game in the Horseshoe. It's that time... time for the Monday-after diagnosis.

What we liked

Wisconsin steamrolls Purdue

Tailbacks Melvin Gordon and James White led the way in Wisconsin's eighth consecutive victory over Purdue.

The defense, and close to everything about it. Sure, the Boilers put together one impressive drive in the first half that was capped by a 22-yard Rob Henry touchdown scamper, but aside from that, the Wisconsin defense dominated the game.

The Badgers collected four sacks as a team, which was great to see after it continually pressured Sun Devil quarterback Taylor Kelly but never get him down for a sack. If Wisconsin's pass rush can contain and create similar havoc next week against either Braxton Miller or Kenny Guiton, it'll give the Badgers a shot to pull off a huge upset. Ohio State sure has looked impressive, but the Buckeyes haven't really played anybody, and Wisconsin's front seven is the best they've faced all season.

I think the single most impressive stat from Saturday's game was the defense holding Purdue to 2-of-14 on 3rd-down conversions. The ability to get off the field and get the ball back in the hands of White and Gordon will be crucial Saturday in Columbus. The less time the ball is in the hands of Miller or Guiton, the better.

What needs to improve

Same as last week, the answer here is the overall passing game. It just looks sluggish. Jared Abbrederis seems wide open on his routes, and then everybody else is virtually nonexistent.

Joel Stave still looks disturbingly slow out of his crouch when he's coming out from under center, and he fumbled another snap with Dallas Lewallen Saturday. Now, Wisconsin hasn't lost a single fumbled snap thus far this season, but if that becomes a recurring problem, it will bite the Badgers when they can least afford it.

Lastly, Jacob Pedersen's knee injury is a bit frightening. He's the clear No. 2 target for Stave's passing attack that was already pretty one-dimensional. Is there anybody ready to step up in Pedersen's absence if he misses a game or two? It sure doesn't look like there is right now.

Here's the bottom line: The passing game will have to be more of a factor this Saturday than it has been all year. Ohio State is too athletic and knows Wisconsin's running style too well to let the Badgers gash them play after play on the ground. Somebody other than Abby needs to be ready to contribute in the pass catching department, or else UW walks out of Columbus with its second loss.

Which players impressed?

White and Gordon would be the easy answers here, but to be honest, they're both playing how all of us expect them to at this point. Unless one of them goes for two bills in a game, they're not garnering the answer here.

It has to a player or players from Wisconsin's defensive unit, and I'm going to go with the defensive tackle trio of Warren Herring, Bryce Gilbert and Beau Allen. The group combined for six total tackles, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and two sacks in Saturday's win. That is great production from guys whose main job is typically to eat up blocks and clog up the middle.

It's been most notably Allen through the first four games, but each tackle has done a great job thus far penetrating the opposing offensive line and knifing through for tackles. ESPN's Ed Cunningham referred to Allen as one of the best defensive tackles in the country during the broadcast, and it's good to see somebody from that line receiving such praise.

Aside from ASU's aerial assault style of offense, you've gotten the sense in the other three games that Wisconsin's defense wasn't going to give up much of anything. Dave Aranda's 3-4 system is certainly working.

Which players underwhelmed?

The quarterback often gets too much of the praise when things go well, and probably bears too much of the burden of scrutiny when they don't. That's the nature of the business, and while it pains me to do it, Stave is the answer here for the third time in four weeks.

His interception in the first half was a bad throw. He chalked it up to miscommunication between he and Brian Wozniak, but it still wasn't a pretty ball by any means. He later missed on a deep ball to Abby. In all honesty, Stave's just not very accurate with the football right now. I don't know if he's still shaking off rust from not having played football for about 10 months, but we're four games in now and that rust is still a factor.

I don't want to pretend like I know the quarterback position enough to be highly critical of his body language, but when the TV cameras cut to Stave's eyes after he misses a throw or after Wisconsin can't pick up a first down, he looks lost. Is anybody else seeing this? He doesn't have the look of a confident quarterback right now, and that's highly concerning going into the toughest game on the schedule this weekend.

Through four games, Stave has engineered only one long touchdown drive on his own doing. That was the 10-for-10 drive to end the first half against Tennessee Tech, an FCS foe.

He's got to get better, plain and simple.

Next up

Getting to know Ohio State

Gary Andersen takes his Badgers into Columbus Saturday night for Wisconsin's first Big Ten road match of the year.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes, led by second-year head coach Urban Meyer. This is the game we've all been waiting for, folks. It's crazy to make such a lofty statement on just the fifth game of the year, but what happens Saturday night in Columbus will go a long way toward defining which direction this Wisconsin season goes.

The game will be on ABC, under the bright lights and the atmosphere will be electric. I would do many close-to-illegal things to get my hands on a ticket for Saturday's game, as I'm sure many of you would too. The fourth-ranked Buckeyes are good, really good. I don't think there is any way around that, but they're beatable.

A middle-of-the-road, Pac-12 Cal team racked up over 500 yards of offense on the Buckeyes' spotty defense, but only 132 of that was on the ground. Wisconsin doesn't have Cal's ability to beat you consistently through the air, so can the Badgers continue to annihilate opposing defenses with the run game? We shall see.

We know the Badgers are going to have to put up a lot of points Saturday. Ohio State boasts the fourth-best scoring offense in the country, averaging 52.5 points per contest. Whether it's Miller or Guiton at quarterback, their offense will be able to move the football. Can the Badgers' O match their pace?

Prediction: Buckeyes by a touchdown, 34-27. It will be close throughout, as these teams have engaged in some great duels the past few years and it's a rivalry that has really emerged recently. The Badgers haven't lost a game by more than seven points in what seems like forever, and I think that streak will continue.

I said it at the beginning of the year: Wisconsin didn’t even beat a .500 Buckeye team on the road when Russell Wilson was the quarterback. Winning on the road in the Horseshoe is an extremely difficult task, and the Badgers will unfortunately fall just short in trying to do so.

Again, I hope I’m wrong.

For the first 15 or so minutes, we look at the Green Bay Packers' loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The defense held up and forced four turnovers, the offense rushed for 182 yards, so how could they lose? We break it down. Plus, another 10 minutes talking about other NFL news and notes.

Then we dig into the Badgers' dominant win over the Purdue Boilermakers. We talk about sophomore running back Melvin Gordon and co. after the controversial loss last week in the desert. What do they need to do to win next Saturday in Columbus against a recovering Braxton Miller and the Ohio State Buckeyes? We lay it out briefly before our Wednesday preview show (8 p.m. CT -- listen in to see who our SPECIAL GUEST is!).

At the 45-minute mark, Bucky's 5th Quarter's own Andy Johnson joins us to talk about Big Ten hockey media days. Who will head coach Mike Eaves have to look out for in the Big Ten's first year, as well as the rest of the nation? Great discussion from the esteemed writer.

A little baseball, our Dupas of the week (and my heart-warming segment of the week, and this one was very, very easy), plus audio from head coach Gary Andersen and senior linebacker Chris Borland to end the show!

Another game, another 500 yards of offense. What did offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig use this week to dismantle the Boilermakers?

Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium, the Wisconsin Badgers took their frustrations from a week earlier out on an unsuspecting -- okay, they really were suspecting -- Purdue defense, amassing almost 550 yards of offense en route to a 41-10 victory.

Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig frequently utilized personnel and formations with two tight ends or more, and Wisconsin scored all five of its touchdowns and ran over two-thirds of its plays out of that personnel.

Run/pass breakdown:

-- Runs: 47

-- Passes: 22

-- Total plays: 69

-- Touchdowns: 5

-- Plays using two or more tight ends: 47 (38 runs, 9 passes)

Observations (with pictures!):

-- More jet sweeps came this week in the first half, this time not just out of the 22 formation. Showing an I-formation with sophomore fullback Derek Watt in the backfield in front of either sophomore running back Melvin Gordon or senior James White, offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig ran it and subsequent fakes out of 31 personnel.

-- Shades of David Gilreath? Senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis even got in on the jet sweep/end around look, taking a handoff and gaininf 16 yards out of the one-running back, two-tight end personnel.

Let's break down the plays out of the two-running back, two-tight end look, particularly the two touchdowns generated from this personnel. 13 plays were run in the 22, all rushing plays. Let's look at the first score by Melvin Gordon from five yards out.

I-formation with senior tight end Jacob Pedersen going motion left. The arrows show how all the linemen will block. Note how Pedersen will kick out the defensive end and sophomore tackle Tyler Marz will hit the second level against the linebacker on the back side. Gordon goes to the back side as the linemen all block to the right.

Gordon sees the hole on the back side and runs to the outside shoulder of left guard Ryan Groy. Pedersen gets his block (though he was injured in the process), and Gordon breaks an initial tackle and takes a defender with him into the end zone.

What about White's 70-yard scamper the drive immediately after?

3rd-and-1 on Wisconsin's own 30. Ludwig calls another run, another two-running back, two-tight end I-formation call.

Groy pulls right as White takes the handoff. The other linemen block down to the left. White reads the holes and takes it to the right.

A defender steps up right at the line of scrimmage, but White makes him and then another Boilermaker miss as he takes it to the house.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. The Badgers have heavily relied on the running game and its success through the first four games of the year. Wisconsin ran on over two-thirds of its plays in the first half (20 to 11), and more that in the second half (27 to 11).

With Stave and the passing game, the majority of the calls out of 11 personnel were out of the shotgun formation, but there were some under center as well.

White was split out at times, showing off a bubble screen look that worked a couple times.

Although not connecting with Abbrederis on a couple of long passes, it is interesting to see Stave finding open coverage to his left side.

College and pro football talk, along with the beginning of the inaugural season of Big Ten hockey with our own Andy Johnson. Tune in tonight!

Happy Sunday, all!

At 8 p.m. CT, we'll talk a lot of football, as well as some Big Ten hockey.

Listen here:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/kielbasakingsse/2013/09/23/badgers-packers-recap-plus-big-ten-hockey-wandy-johnson

We'll also recap the Green Bay Packers' road test against former Badgers guard Kevin Zeitler and the Cincinnati Bengals. How ugly was that first half? Plus, a look at other former Badgers and their performances in the NFL.

As for Wisconsin football, we'll break down the Badgers' impressive victory against the Purdue Boilermakers. Can the trio of Melvin Gordon, James White and Corey Clement be the best three running back trio in Wisconsin history? How concerned are you with Joel Stave and the Wisconsin passing game? How will the defense take on Braxton Miller and the Ohio State Buckeyes?

Around 8:45 p.m. CT, we'll talk Big Ten hockey with Bucky's 5th Quarter's own Andy Johnson! Big Ten hockey media day was this past week, and Andy will drip some knowledge and expectations for the inaugural season.

The Badgers also returned to the coaches poll after a one-week hiatus.

Wisconsin's 41-10 win over Purdue Saturday was good for a few things. It opened the Big Ten season (one week early) on a positive note, erased the possibility of a hangover effect from Arizona state and, perhaps, most importantly gave the team a bundle of positive momentum entering next Saturday night's game vs. Ohio State.

The win also boosted the Badgers to No. 23 in the AP Top 25, as well as returned them to the USA Today Coaches Poll after last week's loss to Arizona State dropped them out. Ohio State, meanwhile, remains No. 4 in the AP poll (we'll just link off to the coaches poll here, since one poll is enough and coaches are silly voters). The whole top 10 actually went unchanged, as the first inkling of change came from Michigan, who struggled to a 24-21 win over UConn and dropped from No. 15 to No. 18.

That allowed Northwestern, after a 35-21 win over Maine, to jump one spot to No. 17 and become the Big Ten's second-highest ranked team. Wisconsin's the fourth and final team in the AP poll, with Nebraska and Michigan State receiving 13 and three votes, respectively.
