The Badgers grab another talented in-state recruit to firm up the trenches.

A staple of Wisconsin recruiting since Barry Alvarez took over in 1990 has been utilizing in-state recruits to bolster both the offensive and defensive lines.

I’ve often said that you can never have too many 6’4 290-plus pound players on your football team, and Benton paired with the other two defensive line recruits, Rodas Johnson and Gio Paez, are sights for sore eyes regarding the depth of the Wisconsin defensive line.

While it’s currently unclear if Benton will factor in as a nose tackle or as a three technique along the Badgers defensive front, his size and athleticism will be a welcome addition. Benton, athletically, reminds me a bit of Tyler Biadasz, a mid-three star recruit from in-state who was once thought to maybe play defensive line.

Benton was the seventh commitment of UW’s 2019 class, and a very traditional type of player; an under-recruited, big body from in-state. According to 247Sports and Rivals, he only has two scholarship offers, one from Wisconsin, and the other from Iowa.

The Janesville product also is an accomplish prep wrestler, finishing as a state runner-up last year.

The Badgers steal a four-star recruit from Columbus, Ohio to add more depth and talent to the defensive line.

A huge addition late in the cycle, Wisconsin was able to wrestle talented defensive lineman Rodas Johnson away from Penn State and Texas from right underneath Ohio State’s nose.

Johnson, another Columbus native to play for UW like Robert Wheelwright and Austin Traylor, will be another addition of youth, talent and depth to a defensive line unit that sorely needs all of the above heading into 2019.

Johnson looks like a five-technique or three-technique/four-technique “end’ for the Badgers, which has to be exciting for a big piece of clay for defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield to mold.

The Badgers grabbed the sleeper linebacker late in the process, but he’s got some major upside.

The stereotype of Wisconsin recruits is the “under-recruited, under developed recruits that no one else wants and by the time they leave five years later they’re solid football players”.

While Skyler Meyers is far from a recruit that no one wanted, he certainly fits the other categories of the stereotype. A long, lanky linebacker that has intriguing athletic range and pops a wallop larger than his current size, Meyers could certainly work himself into an invaluable player for the Badgers, not only on defense, but special teams as well.

The tradition continues with players with two familiar last names.

It wasn’t all quiet on the recruiting front for the Wisconsin Badgers during Wednesday’s National Signing Day. Two 2019 recruits, wide receiver Cooper Nelson and strong safety Dante Caputo, appear set on joining UW.

Their last names should ring a bell, as Cooper is the son of former starting safety and 1994 Rose Bowl winner Scott Nelson. Caputo is the cousin of former Wisconsin safety Mike Caputo, who played for the Badgers from 2011-15.

Nelson verbally committed on Jan. 31, and Wisconsin announced his signing on Wednesday. UW’s National Signing Day page confirms he will come to Madison as a walk-on.

Caputo announced his intention to play for the Badgers on Wednesday afternoon. Wisconsin has not yet confirmed the signing on social media or the NSD page. However, Jensen Gebhardt, a Wisconsin quality control assistant who works specifically with Wisconsin’s recruiting, retweeted Caputo’s tweet.

After visiting Wisconsin in January, he tweeted that he received a preferred walk-on offer. BadgerBlitz.com’s Jon McNamara also confirmed that on Wednesday night.

They included wide receiver Cam Phillips, long snapper Peter Bowden, kicker Blake Wilcox, offensive lineman Logan O’Brien, outside linebacker Tatum Grass, and inside linebacker Jackson Kollath.

Here is Nelson’s bio from Wisconsin’s NSD page, which lists him at 6’4, 185 pounds:

S Dante Caputo

From Wexford, Pa. (North Allegheny), Caputo’s Hudl’s profile lists him as an outside linebacker and strong safety. Caputo told B5Q on Wednesday night that Wisconsin is looking at him as a strong safety, the same position his cousin played while wearing the cardinal and white.

Judging from his senior-season highlights, he certainly fits the mold. At the prep level, Caputo showed the ability to make some open-field tackles, rush the passer when needed, and cause disruption in the backfield.
