After some growing pains that accompanied his move from Ohio and a step up in competition, Currie truly made a name for himself in the Michigan Class A playoffs two seasons ago when he went for 16 points and 12 rebounds head-to-head against Michigan State pledge Xavier Tillman, leading Clarkston to the state title in the process (two of his teammates are also committed to Michigan State). He helped lead the team to a second straight state title this spring as well, and was named Class A All-State team by at least one Michigan prep hoops website. A comparison was made early on to Moritz Wagner, the outside-in Michigan forward who initially declared for the 2017 NBA Draft last summer after a breakout season. Currie has a ways to go with his ballhandling and post game, but can stretch a defense the way Wisconsin wants their bigs to.

Wisconsin and MSU were two of the top three schools pursuing Currie prior to his original commitment to Michigan, with Ohio State also showing interest. When Currie opted to stay reclassified in 2018 when John Beilein expanded his highly-regarded 2018 class, he was squeezed out of the guaranteed scholarship he would have had as a 2019 recruit. Thus he was back on the open market. Lamont Paris was initially UW's lead recruiter for Currie, but Dean Oliver has taken over as point man for this second go-around. Currie picked up a Xavier offer the same weekend as Wisconsin offered him after taking unofficial visits to both places.

Rather than wait out his recruitment until the spring, Currie is choosing to attend Wisconsin as a 2018 recruit with the intention of redshirting as a freshman. He becomes the first Badger basketball player from Michigan since Paul Grant and the first one recruited from across the Lake since Willie Simms back in 1987.
