Verbal commitment Verbally committed to Northwestern

Wisconsin initiated contact with Brumbaugh in the fall of 2020. Its interest intensified in the new year with a Zoom call from lead recruiter Joe Krabbenhoft in January, quickly followed by an unexpected offer from Greg Gard. Prep school power Northfield Mount Herman did not compete during the pandemic year, so Brumbaugh missed his junior season. But he flashed good passing and playmaking skills for his travel team, Prospect U, in addition to possessing great size (6’4”) for a lead guard. While not an explosive athlete, Brumbaugh projects an ability to play both guard positions with his improving outside shot.

Despite attending school in Massachusetts, Brumbaugh is originally from the Washington, D.C. area. He received early offers from Georgetown, Richmond, George Washington, and Virginia Tech and a handful of Ivy League schools, with Princeton in particular at the forefront. Brumbaugh listed Wisconsin as a school coming very hard after him recently, while mentioning a handful of new interest from the Big Ten (Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern). When AAU play resumed, he continued to blow up. Additional offers came in from Wichita State, Mississippi State, Seton Hall, Marquette, Northwestern, West Virginia, Butler, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Penn State, Providence, and Xavier — they kept coming the more exposure Brumbaugh received. The next wave was Creighton, Miami, Maryland, Kansas, and Texas, along with interest from Duke and Virginia. Georgetown, which stood out as an attractive close-to-home option along with Maryland, got Brumbaugh’s first official visit back on June 9th. Wisconsin was the next stop on June 18, followed by Northwestern and Minnesota, leaving one left.

However, in early July Brumbaugh cryptically wiped any mention of his visit to UW from social media, soon after the recording of the Badgers’ locker room meeting with Gard was leaked. Wisconsin kept trailing Brumbaugh relentlessly on the summer circuit though. In the end, both Georgetown and Wisconsin were left off Brumbaugh’s Top 6 list in August. And his choice? “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” landed head coach Chris Collins’ highest-rated recruit ever.
