From time to time you hear about 8th graders playing up at the high school level (see: Jones, Tyus), but Matthew Mors has been playing varsity basketball since 7th grade! That is when Wisconsin first started paying attention to him. His notoriety grew when he led Yankton to a state AA title in South Dakota as a freshman. Mors was very impressive at UW’s advanced camp in the summer of 2018 and an offer from Greg Gard and the Badgers soon followed. He is already fourth on the Class AA all-time scoring list heading into his junior campaign.

Holding additional offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Creighton, Colorado, TCU and the Dakota schools, Mors was thought to be somewhat of a Badger lean early in his recruitment, but took his time. At 6’7” with an expanding floor game, Mors led Yankton to an impressive win over Minneapolis De La Salle as a sophomore. Now that his body is starting to mature, Mors was starting to draw interest from Purdue, Stanford, Texas Tech and ACC schools despite playing off the beaten path in high school and in the AAU realm. Mors continues to run with the South Dakota Attack squad, which steamrolled (4-0) through Madison during the Hard Work Live event last summer.

No one worked as hard to recruit Mors as Wisconsin’s staff, finding Mors on the AAU circuit wherever he went. As a result, none of the developing interest could match what UW was offering. With rumors mounting that Mors was all but committed, he followed the lead of Chucky Hepburn and closed out his recruitment in favor of the Badgers shortly after their official visit together for the Northwestern football game.
