Slowly but surely King had been developing into a top prep guard in Wisconsin before blossoming into the top overall 2017 player in the state after his sophomore season. Stanford, Virginia, Marquette, Minnesota and Butler were among the first programs to contact King at the first possible moment for rising juniors; Iowa State, Green Bay and Drake were the first offers. King attended Wisconsin's elite camp starting June 26, but it wasn't the Badgers striking immediately with an offer ... it was Marquette, no doubt trying to capitalize on the recruiting uncertainty after Bo Ryan's announced retirement plans.
In the following weeks, though, Ryan, Greg Gard and others were often seen tracking King fervently on the July circuit. Often going three-deep for King, Wisconsin watched as King excelled in Las Vegas (Adidas Uprising championships) and closer to home when he took over at the NY2LA Sports Invitational. King's showings culminated in the coveted Badger offer at the end of the month. He also returned to Madison in September an unofficial visit for the football home opener. Shortly thereafter, he informed Gard and Ryan that Wisconsin was where he wanted to be.
After talking with my mom and family I have decided to commit to the University of Wisconsin #BadgerNation #AdidasUprising⚪️

King is the son of former Wake Forest star Chris King and cousin to Jimmy King of Michigan's Fab Five fame. He has been informed he could grow several more inches as well, which would make him an ideal slashing wing player. King returned from a wrist injury suffered in the 2016 state tournament to appear with the Playground Warriors on the AAU circuit in May. As a senior, King scored 47 points in a losing effort when his La Crosse Central team went head-to-head with Nate Reuvers' Lakeville North squad at the 2017 Border Battle. He capped off a dominant senior campaign with a state title with his La Crosse Central teammate. He swept player of the year award, including the 2017 Mr. Basketball award.
