Verbal commitment Verbally committed to Northwestern

In a rare maneuver, Julian Roper and his younger brother Josh transferred midseason, from Detroit Country Day to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep, where they live in the school dorms. Due to a rule at St. Mary’s, the Ropers were forced to sit out the second semester, however. So Julian Roper officially teamed up with 2020 Badger commit Lorne Bowman in the backcourt at St. Mary’s for only one season. Ironically, while Bowman switched to Roper’s old AAU program, The Family, Roper switched to play for the Indy Heat Gym Rats 16U squad.

Though he enjoys orchestrating the offense as a point guard, Roper’s effortless jumper makes him perfectly suited to the shooting guard slot. This passionate youngster also has a knack for defending. Roper started as a freshman at Country Day and continued his stellar play into his sophomore season, resulting in his first offer from Iowa on October 20, 2018. The Badgers and the Hawkeyes appeared to be the early leaders in the chase for Roper’s pledge. Ohio State, Xavier, and Cincinnati followed with offers in the ensuing months along with unofficial visits to both Michigan and Michigan State. He started to generate looks from Butler, Auburn, Louisville and Purdue too. Then offers from Missouri, Northwestern, Alabama, Illinois and more.

Roper was believed to have taken an official visit to Indiana at one point and scheduled his Wisconsin official for Nov. 9 for the Iowa game. But it was a visit to Evanston in October that ultimately helped the Wildcats edge the Badgers for his commitment. With neither Michigan Michigan State picking up interested and summer AAU all but canceled due to coronavirus concerns, Roper announced his decision to attend Northwestern on May the 4th, over Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio State, DePaul, Iowa and Illinois.
