4-Star PF Joey Hauser Announces Commitment to Marquette over Wisconsin (Bleacher Report)
Joey Hauser, No. 49 in ESPN 100, to join brother at Marquette (ESPN)
A vital cog for the back-to-back Division 1 state champions as a freshman and sophomore, Hauser teamed up with older brother Sam and guard Trevor Anderson to lead the Panthers to a 27-1 record in 2014-15 and an unblemished 28-0 record in 2015-16. Upon their graduation, Hauser rose to the task after recovering from an early season ankle injury to make it an unlikely three-peat for Steven Point. The younger Hauser is a three-sport athlete at SPASH, playing football and baseball as well.
Hauser started the July after his freshman season strong with an offer from Marquette and concluded the month with an offer from then-Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. Iowa State and Bradley also extended scholarship offers. With his brother committed to Marquette in the 2016 class, family ties could play a factor in Hauser's recruitment, though Joey has indicated it "could be sweet" to play against Sam as well ($). Hauser attended Wisconsin elite camp last summer, as well as joining Howard Pulley's squad for the team camp. Duke, Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State and Creighton have expressed interest in Hauser also, and Tony Bennett finally extended an important offer from Virginia after Hauser's sophomore campaign. Greg Gard and the Badgers have their fingers crossed that their early attention puts them in the driver's seat, but will have to ward off Tom Izzo as well.
Recruiting services Rivals and Scout both named Hauser as a standout from the Nike Top 100 invite camp in early June. Notre Dame has been a late entrant into the Hauser sweepstakes heading into this senior year. It's fair to say Marquette probably led all along, though Hauser kept things close to the vest to the end. But at least one analyst thought momentum was in Wisconsin's favor heading into what turned out to be his final uncommitted weekend.
Not so. Hauser ultimately chose to team with his brother once again, choosing Marquette before July was over.
