Verbal commitment Verbally committed to Minnesota

Jarvis Johnson had to survive a scary moment -- collapsing on the court with a heart condition -- when he was 14 to even reach the point he's at today. It's remarkable to think that a young player just a few years removed from having a heart defibrillator put in can excel as a high major college basketball prospect, let alone be one of the most athletic and bouncy point guard prospects the midwest has produced in some time.

Wisconsin began scouting Johnson since at least 2011. There was a definite Badger connection in Johnson's recruitment through his aunt, Faith Johnson Patterson, who starred for the Wisconsin women's team in the early '80s. Another family member, sister Tyseanna, was a big-time recruit in her own right and chose Iowa State. Her decision was thought to play a role in where Johnson chose to attend school because the two are very close.

Johnson teamed with Reid Travis and Sacar Anim to win three straight AAA state titles for De La Salle. His best early offers prior to Wisconsin were Creighton, Iowa State, Minnesota, Penn State and UCLA, but he also heard from Cincinnati, Kansas, Marquette and Minnesota.

Heading into his senior year, Johnson set official visit dates in September and October for three of his top suitors: Minnesota, Wisconsin and UNLV. The Badgers were to get his second visit on Sept. 20. After receiving a new offer from Baylor, planning a visit there, and then witnessing the Gophers' next to last open scholarship taken by Jonathan Nwankwo on their official visit to Minnesota together, however, reports surfaced that Johnson had decided to stay home after all.
