Verbally committed to Oregon State
Originally committed to Oregon State before Craig Robinson's dismissal in May of 2014, McLaughlin gave a verbal commitment to the hometown Huskies on Nov. 29, 2014. However, he reneged on that pledge in May of 2015. Shortly thereafter he named a top four of Arizona, Stanford, Washington and Wisconsin. His father Jason, who tried to dissuade JaQuori from decommitting from Washington, disputed the notion that his son had cut his list. Programs like Oregon and Memphis also have been mentioned in connection with McLaughlin. Wisconsin was keyed into McLaughlin on the recommendation of former Badger Freddie Owens, who had been an assistant at OSU under Robinson.
McLaughlin is a very good three-point shooter with the ability to make off-balance or challenged shots at the high school level. He possesses great size for a point guard and though he's somewhat of a combo player, McLaughlin has modeled his game after lead guards such as Jason Kidd and Steph Curry. He already holds a number of school records at a place without much recent hardwood success prior to McLaughlin.
Recently, McLaughlin attended the UA All-American Camp and registered the best vertical leap (39 inches) of any player in attendance. California, Gonzaga, and Oregon began to push for McLaughlin along with his "finalists": Oregon State, Utah and Wisconsin. If Wisconsin were to hire Greg Gard as Ryan's successor, McLaughlin says he'd still feel very comfortable with the Badgers. Gard and Ryan attended every game of McLaughlin's during the Las Vegas Classic in July and encouraged the senior-to-be to take an official visit to Madison in September. The date has been set for Sept. 19, after trips to Oregon State and Utah ($). Additionally, Gard preemptively made a a very successful in-home visit on the Tuesday leading up to the official. Earlier, McLaughlin had gone on the record saying he could wait until the spring to make his decision, but his timeline accelerated once his three visits were complete. An OSU beat writer put in his prediction for the Beavers, and the wish came true. Wisconsin's distance and uncertainty on the coaching staff was too much to overcome.
