Verbal commitment Verbally committed to Duke

Wisconsin was always the favorite school for Johnson growing up (although he recently stated Kentucky was his dream school) and thus he's enjoyed going to numerous basketball games on campus as his stardom has continued to grow. Greg Gard's staff -- primarily Lamont Paris at the start -- was recruiting Johnson even before his first day of high school. Johnson hit a growth spurt making the lengthy point forward a very intriguing prospect at almost 6-foot-6, despite battling a minor knee injury his freshman season.

The Badgers hosted Johnson for a football game in September of 2016 and it seemed the whole basketball community was eagerly awaiting the day Wisconsin finally offered the inevitable scholarship to Johnson. Johnson announced his offer on May 12, 2017.

Iowa and Marquette began pursuing Johnson early also. Though some programs shied away from the pursuit based on the already-solid connection between Johnson and the Badgers, that didn't stop the bluebloods from getting involved. A superb July (an appearance at the Under Armour All-American Camp in Philadelphia and a couple of team championships) attracted the attention of Duke, Kansas and UNC. Johnson visited Marquette ahead of attending UW's advanced camp on June 23. He was expected to visit North Carolina in September, and also made a trip to Duke on August 11. He then attended Kentucky's Big Blue Madness in October and is considered a top priority for every school pursuing him. It will be a tough task for Greg Gard to keep Johnson in-state.

Johnson hasn’t relinquished his spot in the national top five rankings for the 2020 class, but he has added two or three inches to his size, truly making him an impossible matchup at the high school level. After a disappointing end to his sophomore season in the WIAA state tournament, Johnson switched to a brand new AAU squad, Phenom University, on the Nike circuit. He and his younger brother Kobe were also just two of the players from that program who transferred to Nicolet High School to form a prep basketball powerhouse. It was hard to view either one as a good thing for Wisconsin’s chances, and in retrospect, that was likely the best time for the fanbase to truly see the writing on the wall. Yet Johnson continued to pay complimentary lip service to the Badgers, along with Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina; Greg Gard and company continued to do their due diligence.

Johnson attended Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness once again this year, though Duke quickly emerged as the perceived front runner in this race. Coach K and his entire staff made an in-home visit to kickoff the AAU season in 2019. Along with the Wildcats and Blue Devils, Johnson included Arizona and Wisconsin as his final four schools in the summer. He selected Duke on July 4th heading into his final prep season.
