Wisconsin joined Nebraska in hopping aboard the Gabriel “Chucky” Hepburn train early with scholarship offers. The Huskers offer was made by Tim Miles way back when, and the draw of incoming head coach Fred Hoiberg was not strong enough for this in-stater despite making several visits to Lincoln. Meanwhile, the Badgers had a long history of stellar point guard play on their resume. Possessing a powerful lower body and strong build, Hepburn can run a team and take over when needed with his shot-making ability — evoking comparisons from some analysts to former Wisconsin star Jordan Taylor. His high school coach, Doug Woodard, lauds his maturity and toughness.

Minnesota and Creighton offered scholarships too, then schools from all P5 conferences — like Iowa, Stanford, Arizona State, Oregon, California and Virginia Tech — started to take a look at Hepburn. Hailing from just south of Omaha, Hepburn was a starter from day one for Bellevue West. He led the Thunderbirds to a state championship game berth as a freshman, junior and senior, winning it all in 2020. Hepburn finished with 1,706 points, 638 assists and 324 steals in his career and ran with Team Factory on the UAA circuit. Hepburn’s all-around game led one writer to opine that his “unique ability to contribute in every facet ... sets him apart from any other high school player in the history of the state.”

Hepburn made plans for an official visit to Wisconsin, alongside Matthew Mors, on Sept. 27, 2019 for the Northwestern game. While everyone was expecting Mors to commit over the weekend, it was Hepburn that became the first to pop for the Badgers in a surprising Sunday evening announcement. Thereafter he became an outspoken recruiter for his collegiate program.
