Wisconsin beat Minnesota to the punch in offering Heide, a premier young shooter, in May 2019. Later that month he was invited to the Team USA U16 training camp and made the cut down to 18 players. Heide has been playing up a level with the D1 Minnesota 16U team, a club Wisconsin has gotten more and more comfortable with of late (see: Wahl, Tyler and Reuvers, Nate). Like Tre Holloman, Heide also played for his high school squad as an 8th grader — a first at Wayzata. As a freshman, he notched 34 points on 14-for-14 shooting in a game in December. Minnesota offered Heide two days after Wisconsin, with Iowa, Iowa State, Purdue and Nebraska expressing growing interest in the skilled, lanky wing who also plays baseball.

Fast forward a year and Heide, a rising junior, is recovering from foot injury in late May to repair a Jones’ fracture, keeping him sidelined during AAU’s return to the court. Besides Iowa State (odd isn’t it), all of the schools above offered, along with California, Creighton, Virginia Tech and finally, Arizona.
