Lefty alert! Besides being a southpaw, Huff’s outside shooting and defensive length presented intriguing potential as an inside-out recruit for the Badgers. His film also shows the ability to take fairly athletic defenders off the dribble from the top of the key, at least at the high school level. And he’s no longer flying under the radar, even though his rankings have yet to catch up to his talent. Huff was the only class 3A or 4A sophomore to receive any mention on the IBCA all-state teams after averaging 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
The thin 6’9” forward visited the Kohl Center for a game during the winter of his sophomore season and came away impressed. Huff began picking up Big Ten offers the following summer, first from Creighton, Northwestern and Virginia Tech on July 5, 2020. Wisconsin countered 10 days later and, following his “corona summer” pattern, Greg Gard offered a prospect who plays with a strong AAU ally — this time the Under Armour-sponsored Illinois Wolves.
Though Wisconsin may have been in great position with Huff at that point, his lead recruiter was Alando Tucker. The same Alando Tucker that was not retained by Greg Gard in a controversial episode the following spring, perhaps drawing out Huff’s recruitment and opening the door for bigger fish. The Badgers received the third of Huff’s first three official visits on June 17, 2021, following trips to see Northwestern and Virginia Tech. More offers flowed in from Vanderbilt, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, and Michigan State. As he continued to show out during the summer, Huff earned a Gonzaga offer in August and it proved to be a big one. Following an official visit to Spokane, Huff picked the Bulldogs over the Hokies.
Beyond grateful to have received an offer from the University of Wisconsin. I’d like to thank Coach Gard, Coach Tucker, and the rest of the staff for this opportunity. @BadgerMBB @JasonOpoka @WolvesILL pic.twitter.com/sutfGqZxFY
