After Stanford appeared to be in the driver’s seat for much of the past year or so, Carlson still mentioned Wisconsin when discussing potential college destinations. He announced his six finalists and kicked off his visits with an unofficial to hometown Minnesota. Carlson visited Madison for a fateful Sept. 7 official visit, in between trips to co-favorite Xavier and Purdue. As with Steven Crowl though, Carlson cut short his fall visits tour once he knew Madison was the place for him, perhaps aided by Stanford taking a pledge from another forward. Regardless, Greg Gard and his staff closed remarkably well in this recruitment, overcoming a true full court press from Xavier. Carlson’s final tally included offers from Iowa, Creighton, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Ohio State and Colorado, with interest from Michigan as well.

The Twin Cities native helped lead a loaded East Ridge squad to the Minnesota Class AA state tournament for the first time this past season. The Badgers’ track record with big men from Minnesota is legendary, and Carlson has the inside-outside skill set that will serve him well under Greg Gard. Like many young prospects, the challenge for Carlson will be getting stronger, tougher at the rim and more consistent at the next level.
