Andy Van Vliet commits to Wisconsin Badgers (B5Q)
A classic Wisconsin recruiting story. The Badgers miss on signing in-state legend Diamond Stone, then out of nowhere pops Andy Van Vliet, a sweet-shooting international prospect. Scouting outside American borders isn't exactly typical for UW, but uncovering under-the-radar gems is.
Andy van Vliet said he told a close friend a couple months ago that "it would be a dream come true if Wisconsin reached out to me." #Badgers

Citing the university's academic stature and high-level success on the court with players like Frank Kaminsky, Van Vliet selected Wisconsin over offers from Oklahoma State, Washington State and St. Mary's, all schools which he toured in a recent stateside visit in late April. 247Sports gives Greg Gard credit for the recruitment, while Rivals credits Gary Close ... safe to say this was a group effort. Van Vliet will arrive in Madison in August after touring Italy with his Belgian U20 team this summer.
Van Vliet was born in Brasschaat in Antwerp, Belgium and will turn 20 on July 27. He has been playing for a professional club, the Port of Antwerp Giants, and it's junior ("B") team without signing a contract, to retain amateur eligibility at the NCAA level. Van Vliet is a skilled lefty shooter with good shot-blocking instincts, though he is very skinny and will need to put in a lot of work with stud strength and conditioning coach Erik Helland if he's to contribute in the post right away in the Big Ten. But considering the Badgers were recruiting the very raw Josh Sharma (who has a similar body type) not too long ago, this commitment is quite serendipitous. Others have compared him to Tayshaun Prince.
After his newest recruit cleared admissions, Bo Ryan had this to say regarding Van Vliet's officially signing -- on his birthday no less:
"Andy possesses many of the characteristics that have been successful with the other big men that have played in our program. He is a skilled, versatile player who has terrific work ethic."
