Verbally committed to Minnesota
After a remarkable performance at Wisconsin's team camp in late June, the Badgers could not ignore Coffey any more. The proud lefty scored 20 points without a miss in the camp tourney semis and then guided his team to the tournament title. Though coming late to the game with an official offer for such a highly-regarded recruit is a bit odd, the staff has a long-standing and fruitful relationship with the Howard Pulley AAU program.
However, Coffey is the son of former Golden Gopher star Richard Coffey. Both of Coffey's older sisters play college ball too. Amir received Richard Pitino's first call at midnight this June when coaches were allowed to begin speaking to rising juniors. Wisconsin's offer comes a year after Minnesota's offer and two years after Iowa State initially offered. Despite breaking his leg last summer, Coffey remained the top 2016 prospect in Minnesota. Coffey planned to attend the Team USA U17 trials later that summer and was sporting strong interest from Baylor, Connecticut, Creighton, Indiana, Miami and North Carolina. However, an injury felled him again in December when a knee injury ended his junior season prematurely. He sat out the ensuing AAU season as a result. Choosing from a final group of Minnesota, Iowa State, Baylor and Marquette, Coffey made the legacy call and stuck with the hometown Gophers.
