Wisconsin football recruiting: official visit recap and a decision date set [UPDATE]

3-star CB Avyonne Jones is making his college decision in ::checks watch:: a few hours!

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any major college athletics team, but following it closely as a fan can sometimes be difficult and can often be time consuming. We’ll try and condense all the recruiting news you can use into this bi-weekly (sometimes more) post. It’ll include updates on current commits, including stats from their high school games, as well as news on players the Badgers are still pursuing. Let’s get down to business!

Decision time!

  • Late on Sunday night, 3-star CB Avyonne Jones (Southlake, Texas) tweeted out that he was going to be making a decision at noon CT on Monday. Wait a second, THAT’S TODAY!

The former Oklahoma State commit took an official visit to Madison on June 18 and then a few days later visited Cal. His 247 Sports profile lists the Badgers and the Bears as the finalists, so we’ll see which one he prefers at lunch time today. Most of the recent predictions for Jones have been to Wisconsin. ::fingers crossed::

  • UPDATE: after we posted this, 4-star OL Joe Brunner (Whitefish Bay) announced that he would be making his college decision on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT.

Brunner has long been thought to be a Wisconsin lean and if he commits he could start an avalanche of highly rated recruits selecting the Badgers.

Official visits recap

  • The Badgers hosted a pair of players this past weekend, 3-star CB James Monds III (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and 3-star WR Vinny Anthony (Louisville, Ky.), and, per usual, it sounds like both players came away impressed with the program and the city.

The Badgers put themselves into a good position with Monds, especially being his last official visit, but much like Belz mentioned on Friday I just don’t see Monds picking the Badgers. He has family ties to Nebraska and with Jones making an announcement Monday there may not even be a spot left in the class for Monds.

UPDATE: Monds announced on Monday afternoon, after Jones announced his commitment to UW, that he’ll be making a decision on July 4.

Anthony also seemed to have a great time in Madison. His dad even tweeted out pictures of the weekend, which is always a good sign if the parents enjoy themselves too. The Badgers have already taken one wide receiver (Tommy McIntosh) but could definitely use another in this class as they’ll be losing three seniors off the depth chart after the season.
