Editor’s note: Ryan wrote this weeks ago before the original PSU game was postponed. We still hope you are having a Happy New Year, so I left that part in.
Happy New Year! Hopefully your 2021 is off to a great start, even though we are just a couple day in...
Next up on the hard court for Wisconsin is Penn State who features a boring design for their uniforms and a bland color scheme. However, when the Nittany Lions bust out a uniform that pays homage to their past...it’s a a welcomed splash of color.
As a reminder, we will be rating the opposing threads on a scale of oh honey, no, to YAASS QUEEN.
Oh honey, no: Obviously, this is the worst rating. If I must explain this to you, you’re probably wearing socks with sandals right now, or a brown belt with black pants, either way, oh honey, no.
Ewww: Nice try, but no.
Werk it: You brought it.
YAASS QUEEN: Best of the best. Your proverbial milkshake brings all the proverbial boys to the yard.
School: Penn State University
Mascot: Nittany Lions
Color Scheme: White and Navy Blue
Official Brand Sponsor: Nike
Penn State’s home uniforms are white, with ‘Penn State’ across the chest in an arched pattern above the player’s number. Both the school name and the number are in a block font and they are blue, but the numbers are also outlined in grey.
I like the arched letters, as it is sort of a nod to the past since a lot of schools are going with a straight layout for school names.
The uniform features a blue stripe that goes down the right side of the jersey and continues onto the shorts and ends about half way down the shorts and then features the Nittany Lion logo.
The minimalist look of these uniforms is a bit...boring. There are no additional accents on the uniform, aside from the school name and numbers, as well as the logo and stripe.
I do like that the line ends half way down the shorts and then ends with the school logo, but I think they should also include the same design on the opposite side of the uniform as well. I am also a fan of the grey outlining of the numbers, but I feel like it should also be around the letters as well.
Home uniform score:
Penn State’s road uniforms are blue with white letters and numbers, but just as with the home uniform, the numbers are outlined in grey. The same stripe appears on the right side of the uniform, but in white leading down to the Nittany Lions logo.
The blue version of the uniform isn’t much of an improvement over the home uniforms and would also benefit from the same stripe design on the left side of the uniform, as well as outlining of the letters.
Away uniform score:
Penn State wears two alternate uniforms, the first we will look at is their black and pink uniform, which honors the school’s original color scheme.
The uniform is the same design concept as the other uniforms, but with a black uniform and pink accents, including letters, numbers and the stripe design.
No outlining appears on the numbers, but I don’t think it is needed. The solid pink accents on the black backdrop is a very solid look, one that Penn State should wear frequently, especially on Wednesdays.
Their second alternate uniform is once again, along the same design lines as the other three uniforms, but in grey. The standard arched ‘Penn State’ design is still present, while the numbers are outlined in white.
With the grey backdrop of the uniform, white outlining on the school name would really be beneficial to the design. However, the grey and white combo of this uniform is a great look and is a bit of an improvement over their home whites.
