Oh Honey, No…a Bucky’s 5th Quarter Fashion Blog: University of Rhode Island

Here I was this morning, minding my own business, writing about Louisville and when I finished the article and sent it off to our site director (Editor’s note: THANK YOU RYAN!), he was like, awesome, are you going to write about Rhode Island, since Louisville was postponed...?

And sure enough, I look on the Twitters and not 28 minutes earlier, there was a post about the game being postponed and that Wisconsin was adding Rhode Island instead.

But in this day in age, you have to be able to roll with the punches, so here I am writing about a team from the tiniest state in the lower 48...

As a reminder, we will be rating the opposing threads on a scale of oh honey, no, to YAASS QUEEN.

Oh honey, no: Obviously, this is the worst rating. If I must explain this to you, you’re probably wearing socks with sandals right now, or a brown belt with black pants, either way, oh honey, no.

Ewww: Nice try, but no.

Home uniform:

The Rams home uniform is white with light blue trim that goes across the top of the uniform, with ‘Rhode Island’ across the front of the uniform and the jersey number in between the two words.

The numbers and letters are navy blue, outlined in light blue.

The shorts have the school’s ‘RI’ logo on the left leg and there is a light blue sold line that meets with an angled line that drops down the side of the leg, where it meets with another solid line that goes around the back of the leg of the shorts.

I really like these home uniforms, the colors play very well off one another and it is just a crisp look.

Away uniform:

Their away uniforms feature the same accents as the home uniform with the light blue trim across the top of the uniform. The school name and number appear on the front on the uniform in the same fashion as the home threads.

However, the numbers and letters are light blue, outlined with white and the uniform itself is navy blue. While it is the same design as the home uniform, I like this one a bit less, but it is still a good look.

I like how ‘Rhode Island’ is in block lettering, while the number is in a slightly modified block lettering. Usually I dislike block lettering, but the contrasting designs of the uniform make it work.

Alternate Uniform:

The Rams introduced an alternate uniform prior to last season with their current home and away uniforms and I am not a fan...

The uniform is a twist on their home and away uniforms with the same basic shell of the home and away threads, but in light blue. Where they lost me though was just using the ‘RI’ logo across the chest. To make it just looks... incomplete. Had this uniform had ‘Rhode Island’ across the front in the same fashion as the other two uniforms, it would be way better.

Crotch Horns?

During the 2018-19 season, the Rhode Island Rams incorporated their Ram logo into their uniform in an interesting way.

I mean, personally I would have put the ram horns on the side of the shorts, starting down at the bottom, but no... they decided to throw the ram horns in at their crotches...

Why Your Mascot Sucks

The Ram has been the official nickname for Rhode Island since 1923, as a tribute to the school’s agricultural history and the Ram mascot first appeared on Nov. 21, 1929. URI even used to keep live rams housed on campus until the 1960’s.

How would that have been, walking to class and all of a sudden a ram head butts the crap out of you...ahhh college...

Rhody, the school’s mascot has come a long way, when you see what he used to be.

The previous design looked really basic and more so like something you would see as a furry party than as a collegiate mascot. While the current mascot is a great design in concept, I feel like they could have done more with him.

I would like to see a bit more detail in Rhody, specifically in his horns. His look smooth, but I feel like adding a bit more detail to them, such as what the Los Angeles Rams have with Rampage, would make Rhody look even better.

Rhody’s face could also use a bit more detail to it as well. I feel like they made some a step in the right direction when they made the last design update. Hopefully the next one will further Rhody’s design along more.
