Wisconsin stays alive in NCAA tournament with walk-off home run

Badgers score five in the bottom of the seventh to end Notre Dame’s season.

After falling to No. 1 Oklahoma 4-0 Saturday afternoon, Wisconsin found itself in a similar situation in an elimination game during the evening against Notre Dame. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Badgers stared down the end of its season trailing 4-0.

However, UW’s offense woke up just in time in their last half inning of action. The Badgers rallied for five runs to stun the Irish 5-4, capped by a three run walk-off by senior Stephanie Lombardo.

The bottom of the seventh began with a walk by freshman and Oklahoma native Jolie Fish. Then, Kelly Welsh doubled to score Heather Rudnicki, who pinch-ran for Fish.

After Jordan Little struck out looking, Welsh scored on a fielding error. Kayla Konwent earned a four-pitch walk, and Taylor Johnson grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Down to its last out, Lombardo stepped in representing the potential winning run. She blasted a fastball to the opposite field, and the celebration was underway.

Up next for Wisconsin is another round with the best team in the country in Oklahoma on Sunday (1 p.m. CT., ESPN)*. The Sooners have yet to give up a hit in two games this post-season, including no-hitting UW earlier this weekend. In order for the Badgers to advance past the regionals, it will need to defeat the Sooners twice in one day.

While that is a tall task, at least Wisconsin’s season has produced this memorable walk off victory against Notre Dame.
