Fresh off of Early Signing Day for the 2020 class, the Wisconsin Badgers coaching staff was back on the trail working on the 2021 class. After visiting campus Thursday for a bowl practice, four-star 2021 defensive back Hunter Wohler committed to Paul Chryst Monday night in surprising fashion.

The in-state standout lead Muskego to back-to-back state championships from his safety position. This produced a myriad of scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa and others. Schools such as LSU and Alabama were also recently in contact, causing many fans to expect his collegiate decision to drag on later in the recruiting cycle.

A multi-year starter, Wohler garnered first-team All-State honors and the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the state of Wisconsin as a junior with 122 tackles and two interceptions. At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Wohler has great measurables for a Big Ten safety to pair with his speed in the back end.

In watching his junior film he demonstrates a tenacity to come downhill in run support deliver big hits on opposing players. He also does a nice job of tracking the ball in the air in coverage, giving defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard a strong skill set to work with.

Wohler is the third four-star commit for this class, bringing the 2021 recruiting class into the top five in the nation at this early juncture. With a recruiting uptick occurring the past two cycles, Wohler and the rest of the 2021 class has the potential to be special in terms of national scale if things continue to trend accordingly.

With eight top-end targets already in place, and room for a larger class given a larger graduating class, Wisconsin is off to a hot start on the trail.
