Wisconsin Badgers head coach Paul Chryst announced Wednesday afternoon that sophomore wide receiver Danny Davis will be suspended for the first two games of the 2018 season.
Davis was mentioned in a criminal complaint that led to sexual assault charges against wide receiver Quintez Cephus, as reported by the Wisconsin State Journal’s Ed Treleven on Monday:
University of Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus was charged Monday with second- and third-degree sexual assault of two intoxicated women who said he sexually assaulted both of them, and said that Cephus and his roommate, teammate Danny Davis, laughed and took photos of the women, according to a criminal complaint.
Davis has not been charged with any crimes as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Based on the information I have available to me at this time, I have decided to suspend Danny Davis for the first two games of the season,” Chryst said in a statement. “Should further information become available that warrants a reevaluation of the length of the suspension, I will assess that information. We have a high standard of conduct within our football program and we cannot accept behavior that is not consistent with that standard.”
UW noted that Davis will be allowed to practice with the team, but will not be available for games during his suspension.
Chryst is scheduled to meet with media later today at 1:45 p.m. CT. His previously scheduled availability session with reporters on Tuesday was postponed “as [UW gathers] information regarding the allegations involving two football student-athletes that were made public yesterday.”
Wisconsin opens the 2018 season Aug. 31 vs. Western Kentucky. The Badgers’ second game is Sept. 8 vs. New Mexico. Both games are in Madison.
