Wisconsin hosts commits, recruits on weekend

Rounding up some recruiting updates.

The class of 2019 is already off to an unprecedented start for the Wisconsin Badgers, and this past weekend, a few commits and some recruits flocked to Madison.

Among them were four-star quarterback commit Graham Mertz. The Kansas native, who has become a nationally-recognized prep standout, tweeted a picture of himself and Wisconsin quarterbacks coach Jon Budmayr with a picture of Paul Bunyan’s Axe on Friday.

According to 247Sports’ Evan Flood ($), Mertz stayed in Madison for four days, something that should assuage any concerns Wisconsin fans hold about the strength of his commitment.

Also to note: Mertz tweeted that he received an offer from Texas A&M on Monday evening.

Also in Madison this weekend was fellow 2019 Wisconsin commit Julius Davis, the high three-star running back from Menomonee Falls, Wis., who was recently offered by Notre Dame and USC.

Read more on Davis’s experiences in Madison from Ben Worgull and BadgerBlitz.com’s Jon McNamara. B5Q hopes to get an article up in the next couple of days about the impact the in-state standout could make as a Badger.

Alongside Davis and Mertz in one of those pictures was four-star offensive lineman Joe Tippmann. According to the articles on BadgerBlitz and Badger247, it appears one of the eight other current verbal commits came to Madison as well. Based on Davis’s tweet above in which he tagged a third person, it appeared to be Grantsburg, Wis., athlete/inside linebacker Leo Chenal.

There were also some other recruits who came to UW this weekend, including the following (h/t Jon McNamara):

Trey Wedig, a 2020 lineman from Wales, Wis. (Kettle Moraine), visited Wisconsin’s facilities this weekend.
