Wisconsin football recruiting: RB/LB John Chenal commits to Badgers as preferred walk-on

Annnnnnd another one.

Another early walk-on offer is accepted for the Wisconsin Badgers’ class of 2018.

Grantsburg, Wis., recruit John Chenal committed to Wisconsin as a preferred walk-on on Monday morning.

Chenal recently decommitted from North Dakota on Sept. 14, teasing that another decision “will be coming soon.”

“Thank you to Coach Chryst for visiting the school today!” Chenal wrote on Twitter. “Excited to announce that I have taken a PWO offer to play for the Badgers!”

At the WFCA Combine back in the spring, Chenal measured in at 6’3, 222.5 pounds. He ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and a 4.43-second shuttle, along with a 31.1” vertical jump and 9’10.5” broad jump.

According to WisSports.net, Chenal ran for 1,317 yards on 157 carries and 16 touchdowns while recording 103 tackles (eight for loss) with six interceptions during the 2016 regular season. The website also shows the in-state product catching and throwing a touchdown pass (24 receptions overall last year), along with averaging over 20 yards per punt return.

This season, Chenal has already rushed for 947 yards on 65 carries and 16 touchdowns. Combine that with two interceptions returned for a touchdown and 27 tackles, and Wisconsin appears to be receiving a player who has contributed on both sides of the ball.

Rivals.com lists Chenal as an inside linebacker.

Chenal now joins his younger brother, 2019 recruit Leo Chenal, in heading to Madison. Leo committed to the Badgers on Sept. 10. He is also the second known walk-on commitment for the class of 2018, joining Sun Prairie’s Marty Strey.
