MADISON—Another linebacker who was expected to contribute to the Wisconsin Badgers’ defense in 2017 will not play this season.
Wisconsin released its preliminary injury report on Sunday, with outside linebacker Zack Baun now joining Jack Cichy among the four Badgers listed as out for the season. Baun’s ailment, which wasn’t previously reported, is a left foot injury.
The news is a bit shocking, especially since reporters haven’t been able to see practice over the past couple of weeks. Baun previously was out for a portion of fall camp with a right leg injury.
This is a significant loss for the outside linebackers, as UW needs to replace the likes of T.J. Watt and Vince Biegel from last year’s position group. Redshirt seniors Garret Dooley and Leon Jacobs are listed as starters on Wisconsin’s first depth chart released on Sunday and by all indications had an impressive fall camp. However, that leaves redshirt junior and JUCO transfer Andrew Van Ginkel and walk-on Tyler Johnson, who moved back outside to his original position from inside linebacker after the spring.
Baun played in 12 games last season. His best statistical performance was a six-tackle showing against Ohio State on Oct. 15.
Running back Sam Brodner (left knee) and inside linebacker Mason Stokke (right leg) are also listed as out for the 2017 season along with Baun and Cichy (ACL tear)
Running back Taiwan Deal (right leg), wide receivers Kendric Pryor (face) and George Rushing (left leg), and fullback Jake Whalen (head) are currently listed as out for Friday’s season opener vs. Utah State.
