At least two former Wisconsin Badgers standouts will be playing in the NBA Summer League.
The Milwaukee Bucks announced on Friday afternoon that former UW guard Bronson Koenig will play for their summer league team in Las Vegas with games starting July 7. On June 26, the New York Knicks also confirmed their NBA Summer League roster for Orlando-based games, which included forward Nigel Hayes.
On June 23, it was reported that both players would join those respective organizations after not being selected in the 2017 NBA Draft. The La Crosse Tribune’s Todd Sommerfeldt reported Koenig was “expected to sign” with Milwaukee on July 1, possibly a two-way contract that would allow him to move between the Bucks and their new G-League team, the Wisconsin Herd. The organization has not officially announced inking Koenig to one of those deals yet.
Hayes, wearing No. 20, and the Knicks will start summer league play on Saturday against Dallas at 2 p.m. CT. Orlando’s summer league games will run through July 6. One of Wisconsin’s all-time great players, Hayes will be part of a New York squad that features former Florida guard Canyon Barry and Duke center Marshall Plumlee.
Koenig, who’s listed at 6’3, 194 pounds, and the Bucks will play at least five games—three from July 7-10, then participate in a tournament to crown the summer league champion that ends on July 17. Milwaukee’s press release also stated first-round pick and former Michigan standout D.J. Wilson, along with former Michigan State guard Travis Trice—brother of current Badgers guard D’Mitrik Trice—will also play for their summer team.
