Cornerback Alexander Smith from Culver City, California, is a versatile defensive back with impressive skills in the return game. Wisconsin’s lone commit from California, Smith has solid size for a cornerback at 6’0 and his physicality and tackling ability shows up on film. He is one of three cornerbacks in the 2018 class, along with Travian Blaylock and Donte Burton.

Verbally Committed on June 13, 2017

Smith joins a bevy of young cornerbacks at Wisconsin, who will all be battling for playing time in 2018 with the departure of seniors Derrick Tindal Jr. and Lubern Figaro, and potentially Nick Nelson if he decides to leave early for the NFL Draft. But Smith’s ability in the return game could see him earn reps on special teams sooner rather than later.

B5Q’s Jake Kocorowski wrote of Smith’s accomplishments in the return game back in June when he committed:

“Smith’s Hudl film is impressive, and the first thing that pops up is his work on special teams as a returner—with speed and quickness to elude defenders down the field. He routinely showed he can make opposing players miss while accelerating downfield.

According to MaxPreps, Smith returned 13 kickoffs for an astounding 516 yards—that’s nearly 40 yards per return, with three for touchdowns.”

According to 247Sports, Smith also held offers from Air Force, Army, Boston College, and Navy.
