No. 8 Wisconsin volleyball splits weekend matches

The Badgers knocked off Maryland but dropped their match against Ohio State.

No. 8 Wisconsin volleyball split the second-to-last homestand of the season this weekend, losing Friday’s match against Ohio State 3–2 before defeating Maryland 3–1 on Saturday.

Friday saw Wisconsin drop a 3–2 hearbreaker at home to Ohio State. After going up 2–0 in convincing fashion, 25–14, 26–16, Wisconsin could not close out the Buckeyes, dropping the final three sets en route to the defeat.

After a .448 first set, Wisconsin’s offense dropped off precipitously, including a .091 fourth set.

Junior middle blocker Tionna Williams led the way with 19 kills and six blocks. Freshman setter Sydney Hilley had 55 assists.

Saturday was a different story, however, as Wisconsin defeated Maryland 3–1. The Badgers held the Terrapins to .118 for the match, including .061 in the third set and .000 in the fourth.

Wisconsin’s offense improved in Friday’s match, as the Badgers hit .333 overall, including .433 in the first set and .400 in the decisive fourth set.

Senior outside hitter Lauryn Gillis led the way with 17 kills and freshman middle blocker Dana Rettke had nine blocks.

Wisconsin now goes on the road this week with matches at Indiana on Friday and at No. 22 Purdue on Saturday.
