Wisconsin football recruiting: WR Emmet Perry commits to Badgers

Deep in the heart of Texas, it seems as if the Badgers found a sleeper.

Last October, the Wisconsin Badgers had a wide receiver prospect who, while not offered by many, showed tremendous physical potential on his highlight reel. After a visit with some convincing from wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore, he committed to Wisconsin and has shown enough to see the field as a true freshman this season.

I’m not here to tell you that DeSoto, Texas., three-star prospect Emmet Perry is the next Quintez Cephus, but his Halloween commitment to Wisconsin has more of a chance to be a treat than a trick.

Perry announced his commitment to Wisconsin on Monday evening via Twitter.

Perry, listed at 6’2, 170 pounds on 247Sports and 6’3, 180 pounds on Hudl and Scout, has himself a highlight reel that pops off the screen. He’s shown the acceleration to go over the top as well as the breakaway speed to add those yards after catch to the total.

What might be more impressive is that Perry is not just a body catcher. He trusts his hands to pluck the ball out of the air. Of course, DeSoto is a traditional power in Texas high school football, so level of competition doesn’t come into play here.

Yes, the offer sheet isn’t commensurate with the highlight reel, as North Texas and Bowling Green are his only other FBS offers. But in a high school program with two other top-notch receivers in Colorado commits KD Nixon and Laviska Shevault, Perry remained underrated.

Perry, who currently sits at 25 catches for 481 yards and 8 touchdowns, will join inside linebacker Chris Orr as Badgers from DeSoto as well as Lake Travis, Texas, three-star Cade Green as future Badgers wide receivers. He is the 13th known commitment for Wisconsin’s class of 2017.
