Wednesday's rumors that Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst was considering bringing back John Settle as running backs coach provoked some consternation in the B5Q comment section and elsewhere as fans wondered about the fate of current coach Thomas Brown.
On Wednesday night, however, Evan Flood of Badger247 reported that "multiple sources" have said Brown will in fact return next season:
"Sources indicate Brown met with Chryst on Wednesday and Chryst informed the first-year assistant coach he'd remain on staff for a second season as running backs coach.
Reports on Settle's hire circulated Wednesday afternoon, but hours later Chryst notified Brown of his decision to keep the former Georgia running back, per the sources."
Brown himself sent out a tweet Wednesday evening that suggests he expects to return:
Thomas Brown (@iamthomasbrown) January 8, 2015
Brown had excellent on-field results in his first season with the Badgers as seen in the production of Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement. Perhaps more importantly, Brown has shown himself to be a talented recruiter, helping to secure commitments from 2015 four-star back Jordan Stevenson and Antonio Williams, a top-10 back in the class of 2016.
If the latest reports are correct, keeping Brown is a definite step in the right direction for Chryst as he assembles his coaching staff, and one that will hopefully bring even more high school talent to Madison in the future. As for the positions still up in the air -- are Matt House and/or Inoke Breckterfield coming over from Pitt? Will Bob Bostad return to coach the offensive line? Stick right here for updates.
