Wisconsin Badgers news, 7/17: Melvin Gordon, Konrad Zagzebski, top 50 college basketball players

Happy Friday, friends. Who's got weekend plans?

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Football

While watch lists have grown to include anyone nowadays, Melvin Gordon may be present on the list for a majority of season, as the running back was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list on Thursday.

Set your DVRs: Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen will make his way to Bristol, Connecticut later this month, including stops on ESPN'S "SportsCenter," "College Football Live," "Mike and Mike" and "SVP and Russillo," among others.

Konrad Zagzebski has the potential to play a premier role along the defensive line, and he kicks off BadgerNation's list of the Badgers' 30 most indispensable players.

The Otis Green Foundation, established in honor of former football student manager Kevin Green, has set out to raise $250,000 for a fully-endowed yearly scholarship meant for a football student manager.

Basketball

The Big Lead's Jason McIntrye broke down the 50 best players in college basketball for 2015, and three Badgers were included: Nigel Hayes (No. 47), Sam Dekker (No. 9) and Frank Kaminsky (No. 6).

Next on Fox Sports Wisconsin's All-Bo Ryan starting five are Jon Leuerwho led the team in scoring and rebounding his final two seasons on campus, and Alando Tuckerwho just so happens to be the program's all-time leading scorer. Can you name the two other players that achieved Leuer's feat during the Bo Ryan era? I could not without looking at Google.

You would think more teams would want to play Bo and boys after getting to the Final Four, but that is apparently not the case; the team is still searching for its final non-conference home opponent. Also of note: the Badgers are keeping open the possibility of scheduling a home-and-home series, similar to the one against Florida.

Hockey

Women's hockey head coach Mark Johnson and his squad solidified their 2013-14 schedule. It is highlighted by an early conference series against Minnesota at LaBahn Arena Oct. 17-18 as well as a three-game slate against Clarkson, which won the 2013 national championship, in the second-to-last weekend in January.

Recruiting

Mike has our last recruiting notebook, including a visit set for later this month and one in September.

Quick hitters

Bravo, Michigan: the NCAA gave the Wolverines' athletic department $50,000 in grants to fund a mental health initiative for their athletes.
