Would You Like to Run in the 'Happiest 5K on the Planet?'

Fun. Exercise. Bright, bright colors.

Heck, I'll admit it -- my physical fitness has plummeted from its already barely-above-average status since graduating from college. Day job, too much coffee, a fondness for Doritos Locos Tacos -- you get the picture.

But if anything could get me back into the exercise game, it might very well be The Color Run, aka "The Happiest 5K on the Planet." This 5K is untimed, so it's less about mile times as it is fun, freedom and giving back. It's apparently the largest event series in the nation, with more than 100 events and 1 million participants enjoying last year's event. Best of all? It's for charity, as The Color Run chooses an organization to donate proceeds to in each city it visits. Sounds like they're still taking nominations for a Madison-based charity.

"Dang," I'm sure you're saying. "That sounds pretty cool." Let me tell you, it looks even cooler:

Sweet. Of course, I'm writing about this since it's coming to Madison. The details:

  • When: June 29, 2013 (Also May 25 in Racine and August 11 in Milwaukee)
  • Where: The race begins at Willow Island, right by the Alliant Energy Center and just about 3 miles south of downtown Madison
  • How: Sign up as a solo runner or walker, or as part of a four-person team. Register here. Then, you 1) wear white at the starting line and 2) Get doused in some crazy colored powder at the finish line "Color Festival." You can also sign up to volunteer for the event.

Sign up quickly, as registration tends to fly by -- several cities are already sold out. If you're going, or have participated before, let us know what it's like! Perhaps I'll see you there... if I polish off those tacos quickly enough.
