Badger Women Clinch Outright WCHA Title
The Wisconsin Women's hockey team has clinched the WCHA regular season championship. Wisconsin clinched a share of the title two weekends ago when they swept St. Cloud State, and captured the outright title on Friday when they beat Ohio State 7-1.
Wisconsin went 23-3-2 in their run to the league title, which was Badgers fourth since Mark Johnson took over the program in 2002. Wisconsin won the league by six points over second place Minnesota.
The Badgers next games will be the first round of the WCHA playoffs this upcoming weekend. Wisconsin hosts Minnesota State in Verona at the Eagles Nest. 7:05 game time both nights.
Geoffrion Traded To Montreal
Former Badger Blake Geoffrion was traded from Nashville to Montreal. Geoffrion was moved along with Robert Slaney and a second round pick to Montreal for Hal Gill and a conditional 5th rounder.
Geoffrion has been up and down between the Predators of the NHL and their AHL affiliate in Milwaukee this season. The former Hobey Baker winner will start his Montreal career with their AHL affiliate in Hamilton.
When he's eventually called back up, Geoffrion will be a fourth generation Canadien. Blake's great grandfather Howie Morenz and Grandfather Bernie 'Boom Boob' Geoffrion are both members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. His father Dan also played for Montreal.
Besse Set To Start Playoff Run
2014 Wisconsin recruit Grant Besse finally knows who he will be facing in the first round of the Minnesota high school playoffs. The Benilde-St. Margaret's forward and his team will be facing Holy Family in the first round on Thursday.
Benilde is the #3 seed in section 6AA. That section is by far the most loaded section in the state of Minnesota. #1 seed Minnetonka (#2), #2 seed Eden Prairie (#7), #3 seed Benilde (#6), and #4 seed Wayzata (#8) are all ranked in the AA Top Ten poll.
Besse finished the regular season with 75 points in 25 games for the Red Knights. Besse recorded points in every game this season and has a 31 game streak dating back to last season.
Davison's Playoffs Continue Tonight
2013 Badger recruit Tim Davison will be back in playoff action tonight with his Notre Dame Academy teammates. The top seeded Tritons have advanced to the sectional semi-finals and host #4 seed Fox Cities tonight at the Cornerstone Arena in Green Bay at 8:15.
#1 ranked Notre Dame Academy is one of the favorites to win the Wisconsin state championship this season. They advanced to the semi's with a bye in the first round, and a 13-1 victory over DePere in the regional finals. Davison recorded a goal and two assists in the victory.
Prevost Knock Out Video
Thanks to the @BadgersWHockey fan twitter account we've been presented with an awesome video of Badger Women's senior forward Carolyne Prevost knocking out an opponent. I didn't know this but apparently Prevost is some sort of kick boxer or something and this video is certainly a sight to see.
McCabe Generating Some Buzz
Hockey's Future.com writer DJ Powers wrote a piece last week on Badger freshman defenseman Jake McCabe who seems to be generating some NHL draft buzz with this play this season.
Powers talks with McCabe and the Eau Clarie native details his recruiting process, how his season is going, and gives some analysis on McCabe's talent level and where he might go in this summers NHL Draft.
Schultz Top Ranked NCAA Defenseman
Ironically another piece put together by DJ Powers from Hockeys Future last week features a current Badger blue-liner. Powers put together his list of the top 10 defensemen in NCAA hockey and Wisconsin's Justin Schultz topped the list to no one's surprise.
Powers notes the strides forward that Schultz has taken this season by coming back to Wisconsin for his junior season.
