White tops Red in Sunday's scrimmage

The 2009-10 UW men's basketball season unofficially kicked off Sunday night at the Kohl Center with the White beating the Red 45-36 in the annual Red/White Scrimmage.

Here's Rob Schultz's recap on Madison.com.

The story of the night was redshirt freshman Ryan Evans who scored seven points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the White team. He stood out in the second half with two dunks, the first coming on an alley-oop pass from Trevon Hughes and the second on a fast break where he dunked on Jon Leuer.

Just a word of caution. While I hold high hopes for the late blooming Evans, it was only a few years ago when Morris Cain stood out at the Red/White Scrimmage with a game-high 15 points. Cain of course never came close to breaking the rotation, while Evans has a chance to compete for playing time this season.

Junior Keaton Nankivil led all scorers with 13 points, while Jon Leuer and Jordan Taylor struggled, shooting a combined 4-of-21, including only 1-of-9 behind the arc.

Honorary head coach Andy North, who led the White team, got the best of Steve Stricker who coached the Red team.
