Russell Wilson: "I used to beat people up a lot"

8

"I used to beat people up. Truthfully, I used to beat people up a lot. Many of you readers probably think I have been Mr. Goody Two-Shoes my whole life, but honestly, I was a bully growing up. In elementary and middle school, I threw kids against the wall. I rubbed their heads in the dirt at recess. I bit them. I even knocked teeth out." — Russell Wilson

That's Russell Wilson at The Players' Tribune, the new "athletes unfiltered" venture from the newly retired Derek Jeter. Wilson was named Senior Editor on Thursday, but more importantly, he's published this eye-opening post titled "Let's Talk About It." He discusses his anger as a young teenager, how he used his faith to cope with it and how nobody will be able to if we don't speak out and be frank with ourselves. It's pretty easy to roll eyes when athletes take on societal issues like this, but this is a commendable, stark post by Wilson -- that "Goody Two-Shoes" line is pretty hilariously spot-on. Count one for Jeter and The Players' Tribune.

Badgers in the NFL: Week 4 preview

Eight former UW standouts have byes this week, but a whole lot of action remains -- including a lot of former Badgers facing off against each other

'Russell Wilson and a whooooole pack of Badgers'

5

Not much to add here, except that this Vine of Russell Wilson's player introduction from Thursday night's NFL season-opener was made for the Wisconsin blogosphere. Also, Russ: don't be afraid to smile. You look like you got force-fed that line and, boy, UW fans don't need another conspiracy this week.

J.J. Watt is a rich(er) man

2

"Watt said pizza boss he worked for told him he wasn't big enough to play football. He said 'hi to that guy.'"

J.J. Watt, via the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. Watt signed a six-year, $100 million contract extension Tuesday, making him the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. The quote above is just so perfect, particularly for Wisconsin fans who remember Watt's humble beginnings as a walk-on transfer from Central Michigan. While at CMU, Watt famously delivered pizzas to keep himself afloat. Now, he's one of UW's most beloved alumni in the NFL.

Oh crap, your son has to block J.J. Watt

This J.J. Watt clip from HBO's "Hard Knocks" is awesome. The Atlanta Falcons are featured this season, and their scrimmage against the Houston Texans brought them face-to-face with J.J. Watt. The clip begins with Bruce Matthews, a Hall of Famer who's son is Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews, talking to Atlanta offensive line coach Mike Tice (and father of Badger fan favorite Nate Tice). The ensuing voiceover is awesome; by highlighting the football dads first, the transition to Watt is essentially, "Oh, man. Your son's screwed!" And indeed, Watt looks pretty damn unblockable in the clip.

Montee Ball highlights from that brilliant 2011 season

+

There are nearly 10 minutes of highlights here, so it's just impossible to pick one favorite play from Montee Ball. I do think one thing that stands out here, and something that I've always admired about him, is his ability to make the most nasty of cuts look so easy. I think it's how he stays balanced while juking/cutting; he rarely looks like the fastest running back, but he's always able to evade defenders. Worse comes to worse, we've seen him throw out a nasty stiff arm on a quite a few occasions. Also, how much damn fun is it reliving Wisconsin's offense with Russell Wilson at the helm?
