When Bill Butters stepped down from his assistant coaching position at Wisconsin Nov. 7, it shocked the college hockey world. It also created a large void on the Badgers' coaching staff.
Butters noted at the time that he was stepping down to pursue his passion of ministry and teaching young athletes about faith.
"This is about my calling on my life," Butters said at the time of his resignation. "In 1980, I felt called by God to get into ministry, to tell players about faith, or share faith with them.
"I did that for a number of years, and that's where my true passion lies."
Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves filled the vacancy at the time with former Badgers defenseman Matt Walsh. By all accounts, Walsh made a seamless transition to the Wisconsin bench.
Technically, Walsh was hired as a temporary replacement being that the job was in-season. Now that the season is over, the University has to open it up officially to the public. Obviously Walsh will be applying for the job, and would be considered the favorite to be hired on full-time.
Anyways, Wisconsin posted the job Thursday. Here is the official description:
Working Title: Assistant Men's Hockey Coach
Official Title: ASST COACH(N54LN)
Degree and area of specialization: Bachelor's degree required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: Minimum one to three years of coaching experience.
Principal duties: Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director, assist the Head Coach of a Division I Men's Hockey program in accordance with NCAA, Big Ten, WCHA, and University regulations. Areas of responsibility include: scouting and recruiting of potential student-athletes, on-ice practice organization and instruction, analysis of game and practice video, game management, conditioning of athletes, public relations, and other duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
Additional Information: Ideal candidates should demonstrate the following: the ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and administrators, faculty, staff and students; ability to develop and implement innovative approaches and solutions; ability to work well independently and in teams; and the ability to be flexible in accepting new responsibilities.
Conditions of Appointment: This is a Limited appointment on an 11 month contract. Salary will be assigned within the appropriate range, commensurate with the candidate¿s qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is also included. Anticipated start date on or after May 1, 2013. Special Note: UW-Madison conducts criminal background checks for final candidate(s).
