Wisconsin Hockey: Checking Up on the Recruits

With the hockey season quickly coming to a close, let's take a look at Wisconsin's currently committed recruits and where their seasons have taken them. Currently seven recruits are done for the season, while five are still in search of a championship.

Bucky's 5th Quarter will be posting individual recruit profiles on every committed player starting later this week.

Matt Berkovitz: High school season at Ashwaubenon came to an abrupt ending when his team wasn't allowed to play in the playoffs due to a ridiculous WIAA rule that states a team is ineligible for the playoffs if they take too many game disqualification penalties during a season. Played with Team Wisconsin U16 after the high school season and won the state title. Team Wisconsin did not advance past the Central Districts tournament.

Grant Besse: High school season at Benilde-St. Margaret's came to a conclusion when they were defeated by Wayzata in the section final. Was named the 2013 Minnesota Mr. Hockey after recording 76 points in just 28 games. Wrapped up his season with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL with four goals in seven games. The Lancers did not qualify for the USHL playoffs.

Aidan Cavallini: Wisconsin's newest recruit is currently playing in the NAHL with the Brookings Blizzard. Source who watched Cavallini play Saturday night told me he is an alternate captain, and really commands the respect of his teammates. Brookings is currently in the NAHL playoffs, but down two games to none to Bismark in a best of five series.

Tim Davison: Playing in his first full season in the USHL with the Chicago Steel Davison experienced his ups and downs along the way. Steel head coach Scott McConnell told me that he really likes the way that Davison moves the puck as a defenseman, and that he will be an asset for the Badgers. Chicago did not qualify for the USHL playoffs.

Christian Dvorak: High profile scorer out of Chicago played for the Mission U18 team most of the season. Dvorak registered 52 points in 31 games in the High Performance Elite League, which was 13 more than the next highest scorer. The Mission saw its season come to a close when they were defeated at the Central Districts tournament. Dvorak also got his feet wet in the USHL this season, registering five points in nine games with the Chicago Steel.

Keegan Ford: The young blue-liner from Waunakee, Wis., made the transition from high school hockey to the USHL this season. Ford tendered with the Dubuque, and played in 43 games for the Fighting Saints. A late season ankle injury forced Ford to the sidelines for the past six weeks, but Ford returned to the Saints' lineup this past weekend. Dubuque won the Anderson Cup as USHL regular season champions, and will start the playoffs Wednesday vs Muskegon.

Jake Linhart: Like Ford, Linhart is a junior in high school and signed a tender to play in the USHL this past season. Linhart spent the year with the Green Bay, playing in 58 games for the Gamblers. Green Bay qualified for the USHL playoffs, and will open up vs. Youngstown at the Resch Center Wednesday.

Seamus Malone: Just a sophomore in high school, Malone made the jump to the USHL this past season when he tendered with Dubuque. Malone played in 60 games for the Fighting Saints, registering 27 points along the way. Malone was also invited by USA Hockey to play with the U.S. under-17 team earlier this season for a tournament. Dubuque opens up the USHL playoffs Wednesday.

Corbin McGuire: McGuire is Wisconsin's longest tenured commit, as the New Jersey Hitmen forward committed to the Badgers back in March of 2009. McGuire spent much of the season on the shelf with injuries, but came on late with three goals and six points in eight playoff games to help lead New Jersey to the EJHL championship.

Jedd Soleway: The Badgers went back to Western Canada for a a power forward, landing Soleway in December. Soleway started the season with the Vernon Vipers, but was traded to Penticton and has taken off ever since. Soleway has 18 goals and 38 points with the Vees in 33 games since the trade. Penticton is currently playing in the BCHL championship, the Fred Page Cup. Penticton is currently down 2-0 in the series to Surrey, with game three taking place Monday night.

Peter Tischke: A physical, bruising defenseman, Tischke is known as a shut-down defender. Tischke spent the majority of the season alongside Christian Dvorak with the Mission U16 team out of Chicago. Tischke was originally drafted by Des Moines in the USHL futures draft, but his rights were traded to the Chicago Steel earlier this year. The Steel allowed him to get his feet wet in the USHL by playing him in four games this season.

Gabe Grunwald: Wisconsin's only goalie commit, Grunwald spent this past season in the OJHL closer to his home in New York where his father, Glen, is the GM of the New York Knicks in the NBA. Grunwald had his best season in junior hockey, with a save percentage of .906. Georgetown won their first round playoff series over Toronto Lakeshore, but were knocked out in the second round by St. Michael's.
