4 LSU players didn't travel to Houston

LSU defensive tackle Maquedius Bain and center Elliott Porter joined a growing list of Tigers to not travel to Houston for Saturday's season-opener vs. Wisconsin, The Advocate reported Friday. After it was reported that Rashard Robinson (suspension) and Malachi Dupre (injury) didn't travel with the Tigers, Bain became the third last-minute departure from LSU's depth chart. Per The Advocate, Bain's absence is believed to be tied to a suspension, though LSU head coach Les Miles won't discuss any roster news until after Saturday's game.

Bain, a redshirt freshman, was listed as the No. 2 defensive tackle behind sophomore Christian LaCouture on LSU's first depth chart. Losing a member of the defensive line rotation can't bode well for the Tigers, especially with the Badgers' veteran offensive line widely considered the strength of the team.

Porter, meanwhile, was listed as LSU's starting center before Miles said earlier this week that sophomore Ethan Pocic had taken over the spot. The reason for Porter's absence is unknown.

Unless these losses are simply thoroughly-reported "smaller" stories, this seems fairly unusual, especially less than 24 hours before kickoff. While LSU began the week with its quarterback battle perhaps its biggest story, it now faces questions regarding things like "chemistry" and "discipline," even if they're unwarranted. Wisconsin, by comparison, seems to be settling into Houston much quieter. We'll see what kind of impact this all has on the NRG Stadium field tomorrow night.

Game week approaches, and the Badgers freshmen move in. Also, two true freshmen who could contribute heavily to the 2014 squad are featured.

Report: Anthony Jennings to start at quarterback for LSU vs. Wisconsin

LSU sophomore Anthony Jennings will start at quarterback vs. Wisconsin on Saturday, a source tells NOLA.com's Jim Kleinpeter. Jennings apparently beat out freshman Brandon Harris after a strong week of practice.

As a freshman last year, Jennings appeared in nine games and started in LSU's Outback Bowl win over Iowa. He went 13-of-29 for 181 yards, one touchdown and one interception over those nine games. Harris, meanwhile, came to LSU as the class of 2014's No. 3 dual-threat quarterback, according to 247Composite. We ran through the competition between Jennings and Harris in more detail last week.

Much like Wisconsin's stated plans, LSU head coach Les Miles said he wouldn't publicly name a quarterback before the opener. He did say on Wednesday that LSU's staff has "a plan" in mind to play both Jennings and Harris.

In other LSU news, cornerback Rashard Robinson and wide receiver Malachi Dupre both did not travel with the team to Houston.

LSU CB Rashard Robinson, WR Malachi Dupre not playing

LSU sophomore cornerback Rashard Robinson and freshman wide receiver Malachi Dupre did not travel with the Tigers to Houston for Saturday's game vs. Wisconsin, according to several media reports. Dupre, a former five-star recruit, sprained his ankle in practice this week and has battled injuries throughout camp. According to Geaux247, Travin Dural, John Diarse and Trey Quinn are likely LSU's top three receivers. Dural is a sophomore deep threat who caught seven passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns last year. Diarse is a redshirt freshman and Quinn is a true freshman who comes to LSU has a four-star recruit.

As for Robinson, the Advocate reports he's been under suspension after practicing with the second team for much of camp. He entered the fall as a preseason All-SEC third-team selection and came on strong late last season, starting the final two games of the season. He and fellow starting cornerback Tre'Davious White have been lauded as one of the nation's top DB duos. In Robinson's place, junior Jalen Collins is expected to start.

Also, Nola.com reported Friday that LSU has settled on sophomore Anthony Jennings as its starting quarterback for Saturday.
