Happ went from relative unknown to UW Advanced Camp invitee to Badger scholarship offer in the short span of a week during mid-June 2012. He played several times with the Iowa Barnstormers 16U group that summer, coached by Greg Stephen, not Jarrod Uthoff's former coach (Jamie Johnson). However, Happ typically plays with the Quad City Elite squad. He fielded calls from numerous schools once the dead period ended. Nevertheless, while visiting Madison for the second time in two weeks, Happ picked the Badgers over offers from Milwaukee and Green Bay in addition to interest from Creighton and Iowa, which he recently visited.

Heading into his senior season stress-free, Happ rebounded from illness and injury to put together an outstanding finish to the July evaluation period in Fort Wayne at the grassroots nationals, earning kudos of the highest degree. Happ became Rockridge's all-time leading scorer during his senior season, leading the Rockets to an undefeated regular season. After bowing out of the state playoffs, Happ finished fifth in Illinois' Mr. Basketball voting. He also impressed scouts with his play for USA Basketball in the Albert Schweitzer youth tournament, where he was named MVP in leading the Americans to a second-place finish. Happ, whose cousin Jay pitches for the Toronto Bluejays, is also a pitcher and first basemen for the Rockridge baseball team.
