Verbally committed to Ohio State
An intriguing lefty, Carton reminds some of Wisconsin's newest assistant coach, Dean Oliver. And Oliver's presence on the staff can only mean good things as the Badgers get serious in Carton's recruitment. Carton has very good court vision as a distributor and makes an impact on the defensive end as well. He began making a name for himself in the spring after his first season starting as the varsity point guard for Bettendorf. Carton played on the freshman/sophomore team as a freshman and is a recent convert to the point guard position.
Wisconsin made Carton a priority right away this summer. Then Greg Gard extended a scholarship offer to Carton after UW's advanced camp wrapped up in June, where he held his own against Wisconsin commit Tyler Herro. He gained quick attention and offers from Creighton, Iowa, Kansas State, Marquette, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Northern Iowa, but you had to like the Badgers' chances early. Then, as Carton continued to show out with Bettendorf and on the travel circuit, Wisconsin signed Tai Strickland to the 2018 class. Whether UW saw the writing on the wall as Carton blew up or genuinely thinks they have a late-developing diamond already with Strickland, prospects immediately looked grim for signing Carton in the next class, 2019. Carton could not deny in interviews that point guard depth would play a factor, and thus left the Badgers out of his Top 6 of Michigan, Marquette, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio State and Xavier.
Carton made the call for the Buckeyes after narrowing his list again, to three schools. He will join a stacked freshman class that includes two other former Wisconsin targets, Alaonzo Gaffney and E.J. Liddell.
